Alright, so my Western Digital MyBook finally decided to stop mounting to either my iMac or my Macbook. I removed the hard drive and might just put it in a new enclosure, but I want a new one anyways. So, now I'm in the market for a new hard drive. Here are the companies I'm leaning towards, followed by links to the specific hd. Let me know any opinions, if any, you have on the companies and/or any of the specific models.

Seagate - FreeAgent Desk for Mac

G-Tech - G-Drive Combo

LaCie - d2 Quadra

Ideally, I'd just like to get a Drobo, but I don't feel like shelling out that much money. The Seagate is intriguing because it has a 5 year warranty. The G-Tech is 3 years, and the LaCie's are 2 years. The LaCie 1TB is a great deal on Amazon. Anyways, let me know any opinions or experiences you have with any of these.

Thanks!

Yeah, my career with WD is now over.

I'm leaning towards the LaCie or the G-Tech. Which LaCie do you have?

I bought a Maxtor, from Radio Shack, and it kicked the bucket after 2-3 months!? I didn't even leave it pluged in all the time and it still croaked. Avoid Maxtor if you can.

Well I've never had an external HD, but I'm looking for an easier way to transfer my music, photoshop files, and photography stuff *coughandtorrentscough* between my desktop and laptop, so I'm looking for one for Windows too. I was actually just about to buy a WD, but I guess I won't now.

Without the WD and Maxtor, these are my top three choices. Anyone know much about any of them?

Yeah, WD doesn't get a good reputation with either their product or their customer service. I've read that LaCie has awful customer service as well. I'm trying to find out more about Seagate and the G-Tech which is built for Macs. We need to get a lot of input on this topic because it's relevant to anyone looking into externals. Unfortunately, there are horror stories for every external there is, but the warranty and customer service are important factors for me.

Western Digital and Seagate make GREAT internal drives, but usually they have shitty external enclosures. The majority of hard drive failure is caused by overheating, so I'm just looking for something really well ventilated. The aluminum ridged ones made by G-Tech and LaCie are nice, but I'm still looking into the Seagate one. This is a difficult decision for me haha. I hate hard drives dying after a year. I need a little bit of longevity.
