I always ask that the bands:
Put a banner on their myspace page
Put my company on their top friends
    Wear my shirts at shows
Take promo photos and live photos wearing my tees
    Promote as much as possible

and they’ll do that and you "only" give them some tees?
    which bands do you sponsor?
and in which way do you contact them?
    email or personal on concerts?

I generally follow that as well. In return from me they get free tees, promotion for their work (albums, shows in my area, new songs, etc.).

do they have to sign contracts with you
or is it up in the air?

I have sponsored many bands, small and large.
I would suggest writing up a contract for the band members to sign. I would also highly suggest meeting up with them in person at a show/concert. If you don’t present yourself seriously, they won’t take you seriously and just take the shirts and wear them once at a show and that would be it.

The best person to talk to about sponsoring bands would be Glamour Kills. I have not seen any other company as successful as them with sponsorship.

well i only work with respectable dudes, and they know that i do need to make ALITTLE money off of the company, so they dont go nuts, usually like 2 shirts for each. but mostly one each because they all cant wear the same shirt on stage. but they also help me alot so its worth it

I tell each band, we work under the trust factor. I hate tying anyone down with a contract. If either of us (the band or me) slacks on an aspect, I want us to be able to tell them that.

If we feel it’s not working out for either party, it can be canceled at any time.

And normally, I give each member one tee of everything we have available.

I’ve also been working out 'Secondary Sponsorships' lately, for any band available. They all get 35% off merch, and if they take pics of them rockin' it (promos or live), we do light promotion work for them. A few have hopped on that.
