It's not even a critique, but one thing I will say about this one is that if you had moved the pink backlight flash up to the level of the molding on the wall you could've avoided the gray shadow from the molding that cuts through the center. I think I'd prefer an all pink background so you get the unique atmosphere without drawing attention away from the portrait subject. Kids are absolutely impossible to photograph for portraits and wonderful to photograph just being themselves, without any direction. I went to SLC last week and my mom wanted me to take a portrait of her 4 grandchildren; a 4 month old, 3 year old, 5 year old, and 8 year old. Here's the best 2... <img src="http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm153/tjflashman77/emptees/Grandkids01.jpg" /> ...and they're basically unusable. (Check out my nephew's "devil horns" in the top pic.) It was night so these were shot with the available incandescent lights in the room and a single off-camera flash bounced off the ceiling from the front-right. I used a tripod for the camera. I shoot alot on black velvet-like blankets cuz I just like it, but for both of the animal shots there was a good deal of PS-ing. The background and foreground on the cat photo were put in in PS (the foreground could've used more work, but eh), and the pic of the dog was on a dark couch so i changed levels and removed spots of lint and stray highlights. If I take a picture that I can see something in I occasionally end up spending a couple hours on it, but for the most part post-processing puts me to sleep. I've shot weddings in the past and don't do it anymore because I can't handle the amount of monotony that goes into editing so many photos. Thanks again, heavy. I will post some mountain/cloud pics from SLC soon, as those are actually recent. Your new photos are excellent. Both in composition and color-wise. The oldest girl is my daughter. I did it at full resolution so that it would be print-ready and it really takes more time than folks may think. Like stock or whatever. Also what is the proper or preferred protocol for asking artist permissions, or usage. I usually just yoink off the goog. But I should be more considerate of the peoples that have made the stuff. Honestly I think most stock is over priced, even the good stuff. I object to paying mostly because it's not going directly to the artist, in most cases.
