  <body>Hey guys,
I know other than tee's that a couple of you also do design/illustration work for tour posters. I just got back from Flatstock/SXSW and running off of the inspiration of seeing all the great artists there, I wanted to ask around to see what you guys charge for poster art commissions?

To clear up any confusion, I'm not looking for a designer, but asking my fellow artists here generally what they ask ($) for such commissions. Any feedback here or through email would be greatly appreciated. Thanks kids! </body>

<body>i know a lot of poster artists do the work for free and make their money back by selling the posters at or after the show online.

Production costs are usually the designers expense unless the band plans on selling the posters as well, at which point different arrangements can be made. Always make sure you have permission from the band though. You are basically licensing their name to sell your artwork.

Thats really the best way to do it. Ive been asked by a promoter to do posters for a decent sized club in Orlando and they only wanted to pay me 10 bucks a piece and didnt offer to give me a portion of the posters. So i guess in short, if you want money from posters, you gotta work for it.

EDIT: if we are talking tour posters for a specific artist, not one time gig, standard design rates apply

<body>Thanks Derek. That certainly helps. Poster art is something I have wanted to get into for some time now, but I had no clue as to where to begin. I really appreciate that insight.

Considering that I myself would be creating but not printing the art though, do you guys charge the same rates as you would for tee design/illustration??</body>

<body>i trim it down to get the job sometimes. Its really undervalued and the band never sees direct proceeds from poster distribution like they do shirts. I think the next time i do one though im going to pick up some of the printing costs and talk the band into letting me sell as well as them.

i LOVE posters though, i want to do more, i have a whole collection. Im totally envious of your trip to flatstock</body>
