Tee shirt designer rightcoaster - Cody

CS School

posted 4 months ago by rightcoaster

So I've had cs3 for about 6 months or so now and am finally learning how to use photoshop more and more from reading online tutorials and some other stuff. But what I'm getting at is, how many of you guys out there are self taught and how many have taken design oriented classes? How long and which method do you think was most helpful?

i started off learning on my own. www.good-tutorials.com was a big help to me. start off with beginner tutorials then work from there. i had a good friend of mine always able to help me out when i got stuck at certain spots (which helps). its taken me a lot of time to really the hang of things but if you are really into it then you shouldn't have a problem picking it up. classes for me just help me find little things i would of never known on my own but i would say its harder to take a class then just teach yourself but thats just my opinion

I got all my photoshop knowledge from when I used to photoshop cars, I used digimods.co.uk, they have a massive range of tutorials for doin cars and I jus kinda crossed it over into graphic design.

your best bet it to just do your own project and set your goals really high on the project. Then build it, but make it something you have no idea how to do that way it pushes you to do new things.

    psdtuts.com is good too

i totally agree with this, that's how I learned my way through a lot of programs, especially flash.

yeah thats been the goal lately,read-apply. but i was also curious about how many people actually took classes for stuff of if the majority of the designers on this site are self taught.

im self taught photoshop, i got help pushing flash from simple stuff to database driven and php. But everything in photoshop you can teach yourself if your willing to put in the hours. Find artists your admire and try to recreate their art. That will also help.

Yeah, I agree with that. I have learned ALL graphic design/art on my own. I have a knack for figuring out things/programs, and that's what I did with photoshop and illy. I'm learning programming in school because I find it more methodical and it's easier for someone to make you read and practice the basics than tutorials. However, good books do help. But, for art and design, it's almost better to just push yourself on your own, and find help where you need it. Classes generally give you a good push, but the rest is up to you.

I pretty much learned all the programs on my own. I went to art school but that mostly focused on design and less on the programs. After all, the programs are just a tool. You need the knowledge to back it up.

That said, I've learned more on my own than I ever did in art school. Still, I am fundamentally sound, which is always nice. I agree with a killer wombat. Make up some project and start getting to it. That's the best way you're going to learn. There's a wealth of knowledge online. Any question you have has already been asked and answered a ton of times. Just gotta search them out.
