May be a dumb question, but should I get a DBH account and post some tees there?
Can any members here tell me if its worth it? Like have you found the winnings to be fair or the printing quality to be good?
Im a DBH noob so bare with me. What are the pros and cons from your experience?

Your Finley. You will win. Just do it. Duh
labyrinth said 7 months ago
i feel like you could definitely benefit from it being that you design extremely well. so youre just getting your stuff printed and getting paid for it. and if you win shirt of the week/shirt of the month you get a lot more money. so i feel like for you its a win win situation unless you feel like you could sell the design a lot better than dbh could. id say go for it and win some money finley.
Birdie3431 said 7 months ago
i dont think hes really asking if he will win (which he will) but if its worth his time/effort and if their printing quality will do his designs justice.
quakerninja said 7 months ago
The main pro is us goofy fan boys voting like mad, The down side it most all rips were from DBH but again you have fans.
here is the money break down
Each weekday a submitted design wins the Shirt of the Day (SOTD) prize of $750 ($500 cash & $250 store credit). Each week the five previous SOTD winners go head to head for the Shirt of the Week (SOTW) prize of $1000 cash. Then the four SOTW winners compete for the final prize of $1750 ($1500 cash & $250 store credit) and the coveted trophy and title of Shirt of the Month. All in all, a winning design that goes all the way can win up to $3500!
plus you can earn more depending on # of sales the shirt gets.
http://www.designbyhumans.com/win/rockstar/
It has one of the best payouts for a Competition site.
get going.
http://www.designbyhumans.com/win/submit/
oh and they can do this too
http://www.designbyhumans.com/win/design_101
I guess you could have just read that yourself at DBH huh. Doh!!
Birdie3431 said 7 months ago
so actually the absolute most you could get from one deign is $8,500! sweet moses!
skull with hair said 7 months ago
fuck DBH, i created an account, submitted a design (which included saving the fucking file in like 5 sizes) and nothing. the design did not get posted and i got no email from DBH saying anything. lame.
jfinley said 7 months ago
Yeah I think Im mostly concerned with if they print it, the shirt is "theirs" and I cant print it myself down the line. If anyone would want to buy it, it would have to be through them.
And do they print their logo on it?
And I know their limit says 8 colors, but do you think I could post these on there and it would be ok?
http://emptees.com/tees/159-bold-is-beautiful
http://emptees.com/tees/1162-maggot-folk
http://emptees.com/tees/429-close-your-eyes
And if you win, how do you send them the hi res file? Layered? JPG? Do you have to tell them the Pantones? How is the printing quality? They do all over prints and jumbo prints right?
jimiyo said 7 months ago
fo shizzle. if anything, it will get more exposure for goMedia
pros:
1. good exposure.
2. decent pay if you win.
3. you are whats represented there. THE ARTIST. so all you are building is credibility and a fanbase, which seems to build on itself. i have a theory that if you can maintain an identity as an artist, and your style, much like a business, people will come to you for YOU, not your business services. eventually i want internet famez so people will come to me to ask me to do my style... like how you say people come to you for Affliction type work... they will come for FINLEY! this could be a basis for an apparel line of your own once a fan base is built.
4. why not? i bet you have some rad designs sitting around that would defintely get some major play. and im sure DBH guys wouldnt mind having a jaggernaut like you show up. its more creed to their business.
5. you have an army of 10,000 greeks who are willing to wage war with you!
6. they are not afraid to experiment with non traditional print techniques.
cons
1. each contest site seems to have its own style. sometimes you might have to mold to their styling, but not always.
2. they have a seemingly random way of choosing designs to be printed, so votes do not necessarily equate to print.
3. losing, to something you think is shit, sometimes is tough to take.
lets become famous Finley. im waging my own war too.
heres an interesting article about becoming a successful artist... it makes it seem easy... although we all know it takes mucho work but
THIS IS SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRTA!

DBH have been awesome, they can pretty much print anything and have a great range of specialty inks/foils etc.
They only print their logo on the inside at the back.
You can provide a 300dpi psd (i think you can provide the pantones) and yup they can do jumbo and all over.
Your work is right down their alley, youd be sure to do well.
jfinley said 7 months ago
Thanks Jimiyo, Ill submit some things, see what happens. Will you guys vote for me?
MykeCatastrophic said 7 months ago
No. Never.
Of course we will man!
Kolby said 7 months ago
I wont vote for you. I hate you.
csj89 said 7 months ago
ive won two times! definitely worth it. your style fits too on what they like.
they wouldnt have any problem printing the 3 designs you posted, they can print anything afaik. although im 50/50 with the shirt they print on itself - their own cloth, it would have been better if they printed on AA.
jimiyo said 7 months ago
more pros.
7. suppose you can start winning like mad crazy... you can work from home buddy! in your underpants, and with your new Mrs. Finley. i personally dream about working from home, and raising the kids with a wifey.
8. you get to design whatever you want. no more non-artist client telling you to change up something because they dont like it.
9. less overhead. its all digital. but GoMedia is probably already like that.
10. you get to challenge yourself with your art. since you get to do what you want, you could push yourself harder and be more into what you are creating than for a client.
11. assumption. something is a brewing inside Finley? something more than just one contest? fame, fortune, GLORY! self actualization! IMMORTALITY! Take iT! Its YOURS!
srsly... Do you feel a want for more?
yeah though... make sure you put it in that Vote for me thread... dont be an a-hole and start your own thread...
JOKES JOKES.
YOU, Spartan, have earned the right to your own thread!
Nate said 7 months ago
+1
Joe said 7 months ago
To make it even more explicit: they can print basically anything, and they do it really well. And they have access to pretty much any specialty printing method you can think of, except all-over cut-and-sew. The three designs you linked above all definitely stand good chances!
ryanmiller said 7 months ago
definitely submit some stuff Jeff.. youd kill it man!
quakerninja said 7 months ago
Huh Sparta you say. I do like kicking people into deep holes. I want to see one of you in a superbowl ad next year do it.
jfinley said 7 months ago
Well, I kept holding off cause I kept thinking that we would somehow print all these rejected tees ourselves and sell them ourselves. But time keeps passing and we arent getting any closer to printing them. Two key problems keep arising:
1.) Large upfront cost to print those damn designs
2.) Cant find a reliable printer thats up for the challenge
So I think Ill try DBH and see how it goes.
herman said 7 months ago
definitely worth it, finley. their print and shirt quality is top notch.
the only con i guess is that when you win, you cant use your winning credits to pay for the shipping (if youre outside US).
collisiontheory said 7 months ago
herman is a DBH superstar he should know hehe.
go submit your stuff man although those designs you posted might be too difficult for a jumbo print. most of their jumbo prints are one to two color. i havent seen them print full color as a jumbo.
Ameeee said 7 months ago

You would win big fo sho, I think your designs suit their style pretty nicely. The prize for winning is good and there are no outlay costs for you. Couple that with the amount exposure youll recieve by winning and it looks like a good deal to me.

I will also be getting in on this thing. Keep a look out.

do you have to use there tee template or can you use your own?
godmachine said 7 months ago
where is the 'submit a tee button'??
see what i mean about terrible navigation and a messy site?
godmachine said 7 months ago
do the pics have to be 72 dpi?
jaynajaynajayna said 7 months ago
well I just made $1500 on a shirt I spent about an hour and a half on, so, yeah, it was pretty worth it. I still have a chance to win another $1500
I was a little miffed because they changed the placement, honestly I think to the detriment of the shirt. But I mean, the design belongs to them now so theyll do with it what they will.
Im not really a fan of the shirt colors they offer for printing though, theyre all pretty subdued.
But yeah my own shirt came in the mail yesterday and despite its changes it still looks effin sweet. Everyone whos seen it and doesnt know its my design has been pumped over it

• Use your own tee template, it doesnt matter.
• go to 'win' its all there
• kind of, but its not that bad
• Use save for web in photoshop to keep your file size down.
godmachine said 7 months ago
shit site.
cheers derek bro.
jaynajaynajayna said 7 months ago
It doesnt matter so long as you use the colors offered in their template.
And yeah at first I totally hated the navigation but I got used to it

How much does a normal SOTD get on there?
greggrillo said 7 months ago
Five new Shirt of the Day winners are chosen each week. Each wins $750 ($500 cash, $250 credit). One of these is chosen to receive an additional $1000 cash for Shirt of the Week. Each month one of the previous Shirt of the Week winners will be chosen as Shirt of the Month and win an additional $1750 ($1500 cash, $250 credit).
jfinley said 7 months ago
I actually meant how many votes does a typical SOTD received to become SOTD?
collisiontheory said 7 months ago
Ive seen shirts printed at 30 votes. And it was submitted the same month as it was printed. Mine was at 60. Ive seen others at more than 100 still not printed. I think it really depends what they want. So you cant really tell.
Randomentity said 7 months ago
they would be stupid not to print that. just sayin'

Good Luck with that: piece of advice: dont let them get computer-nerdy till they are at least 10- they need a childhood with peers. and the PC kind of keeps the nerds from spending time with their friends. dude, theyll get there:))
This thread is going crazy. youll get your 300 spartans to vote in no time. and then some persians and their elephants, and the ugly ninja-like dudes, etc.

On the shores of emptees today your army of slaves faces free men!!!!!!

Ah yeah, for sure. Good advice. I will make sure they sketch their work first before going on the computer! :-)
Randomentity said 7 months ago
lmao, golden.
can i vote twice?
collisiontheory said 7 months ago
I think emptees should have a voting militia. Kind of like the Manticores but just to vote for other peoples designs on several websites lol. If jeff can get this much votes in about a day then well need all the help we can get!
brett_district said 7 months ago
you could always try our district shootout. its new, and although the cash is not great the competition is lower too. its sort of our ghetto-fab beta run. also, everything is printed on high-end organic blanks, and our print quality is pretty decent. this months contest benefits Times Up a NYC bike advocacy group. check it out at www.districtcotton.com/blog1

jfinley said 6 months ago
They havent printed it yet. Im starting to think DBH isnt worth it simply because of the uncertainty and slow turnaround time.
quakerninja said 6 months ago
Are you seriously thinking of baling on them?
Kolby said 6 months ago
ummmm dont
jfinley said 6 months ago
I havent put a any serious thought into bailing on them. Not yet at least. I see us submitting more tees to them if this one works out.
RikkiB said 6 months ago
Dude, youve got it in the bag. Be patient, itll pay off.
derekdeal said 6 months ago
i know what you mean, i got another offer on mine, i want to bail, but ive already had it sitting there for two months. and then you see things like this and question, why the hell am i posting at all.
http://www.designbyhumans.com/shop/detail/2303?category=mens
jimiyo said 6 months ago
i do have to say the slow turnaround is quite irritating.
they had paid me for revelations 2 at least a month or two before they printed. i started thinking they would never print it.
they also were gonna do a interview of me to post on the website like some of the other artists... that was about 4-6 months ago. no interview yet.
i figure they must be busy with something. i know one of the main owners just had a baby. not that that should impede work.. but just sayin...
as far as submitting more tees.. yeah, i guess it would be better to hold off until this one hits.
i still think its an ok avenue... although i was thinking, dang, if you dont win SOTW... its only $500 for a hot design. that sucks.
Oliver said 6 months ago
hey hey hey hey. i posted one. help me out, it would be nice of you.
ChadDoesDesign said 6 months ago
did you win yet?haha
Incarnadine said 6 months ago
Ive been meaning to make a topic about this but worried it would be a taboo question, but Jimiyo, I was wondering what one would consider to be a good price for a hot design?
