they rejected my BTBAM shirt as well.
Albeit not as good as yours. But then again, yours is worth a lot more than what they would pay.
Here’s mine. All I got back was a "The band didn’t like this" gotta love spec!

done and done! That was my last ever. The reply really did it for me. I was pretty heated.

my email address is doublej@victoryrecords.com if have a complaint/concern email me. or im me 'doublejineffect'

Spec work is always a risk, its great for new/young designers and it kills me to reject designs as i know what goes into it. The majority of the time it is out of my hands. There is no need to complain about this on a message board.

Andrea nailed this job, that design is amazing, but getting approvals is like pulling teeth!

it’s really not great for new/young designers. It’s great for clients who want to take advantage of new/young designers.

i dont see the problem with spec work people arnt stupid people know the what they are getting into

so as ive said before if you want to do spec do it if you dont just ignore it. Is it that hard

and if your item gets rejected dont moan you knew what you were getting into before you submitted

It devalues the work of everyone. So, while you may not have a problem with spec, you’re hurting the rest of us. Get it?

This is not just the opinion of a few people on this board. It is prevailing wisdom.

i dont do spec anymore and i get what your saying

but to accuse people who do spec of ruining the industry seems a bit harsh

there just trying to pay bills and maybe dont get as many job offers as there name isnt out there yet

i just think its better to educate that to tell people what to do and at the end of the day its there own personal choice

I’ve definitely learned my lesson with spec, even just working on it.. I constantly wonder whether or not they’ll dig it.

You shouldn’t give people your services unless they are going to pay you for them. You can’t go to a psychiatrist and not pay if you don’t like what they say. You can’t call a bunch of contractors and have them carpet different rooms of your house and only pay the one who does the best job. There aren’t many professions where clients can get you to do the work, and then decide whether you are worth paying or not. If you have a portfolio of work then anyone who wants you to do work can decide whether you do good work based on your previous works.

If your just starting out and don’t have a good portfolio of work then maybe you should do a few discount/pro bono work for some local/regional bands. Build a relationship with them and agree you will do this many designs at this discounted rate. Then as the band grows they will tell other bands and you will grow along with them.

All these call outs that just want every possible designer to design whatever they want with no direction given just seems so fickle. It is wrong of clients to ask you to do the work with no intention to pay. I guess as long as designers do it then why would they have any reason to stop.
