I download stuff, but I also buy a shitload of stuff.
I still see a ton of movies in theaters.
I still buy DVDs.
I buy CDs if I really like them (or even if I just like the band, and not really the CD).
Labels should start using this stuff to their advantage. The future is going to be crazy when it comes to downloading stuff, having access to media at all times instantly -- these large companies who are targeting kids with lawsuits should take a second to consider how to use the technology to their advantage.

and torrents are a great way to sell shit to. no shiping on downloads.listen up corporate fat white americans with cigars and bald cats sleeping naked on piles of cash, the days of buying a box with a disk in it are overz.
Say its a band like FOB. I know I like their shit so I would never download one of their cds. I like them enough to but it. If its a new band I will download the cd and listen to it. If I like them enough (even though I already have it) I will go and but it. If the band is super old I usually just download it because they have enough money to last their family a shit load of generations.

you gotta taste test, i remember i would hate when i was iffy about a band at the record shop, give em the benefit of doubt, buy the album and COMPLETE DISAPPOINTMENT!!!
re sale value, practically nothing, so it was usually just better to keep the clutter.
now i can listen, evaluate and then buy, or not and get rid of the files.
nothing beats going to get a cd at the store. That anticipation to see if the quality is higher, looking through the album art, the frustration of trying to get it open with those bastard security stickers then trying to read along with the lyrics to see if it says what you thought it did.

... yeah, I love my job.
i love buying cds, unfortunately the bestbuy here doesnt carry dick, and fye charges 19 bucks a pop. I usually have to resort to itunes, but then i lose my beautiful artwork and have to fuck with mp4s. Indy online distributors you say? well sounds good till im paying shipping every time i want something new. I use torrents every now and then, but i always try to purchase the disc at some point, its stealing, end of story.
I wish there was an online store that would allow me the option of downloading the album before its shipped. Then maybe allow me to stockpile a batch shipment over a period of time, then send all the cds i bought at once. Theres a business model for ya, now someone give me the funding.
I download all my music, but am constantly going to shows. I buy movies that are blockbusters, but always buy my indie/foreign flicks. Programs... well, lets not go there just yet...
seriously though, just think...how many of us wouldnt even be designers/developers today if we hadnt gotten illegal copies of Adobe programs. I know I would never have gotten so into it - the price tag was way too high when I was younger and starting out.
and i think adobe, to some extent, has to be aware of that. im sure a shit ton of their business comes from people who learned on stolen copies and then when it was time to go legit, bought real copies.
explodingtoes said: Im a vinyl nerd. I stopped buying cds awhile ago.
I either buy vinyl, legally download, or OCCASIONALLY grab something off a blog to sample.
i could see downloading and buying vinyl, because how much of a pain would that be to convert to mp3's? an immense one.

especially when its a lot of weird rare 7" records and stuff...stuff that you cant find anywhere online. huge pain.

Why lock a thread that could encourage general discussion?
I unlocked it because I was doing a search for torrents on here. Rather than start a new thread, I unlocked the one that seemed to be subject related (and unnecessarily locked).
ive found some good art stuff in torrents. GIGs of tattoo flash, oil paint masters, how to art videos (which prolly wasnt legal... sid mead how to design)
I download music and fortunately, the bands Im into sell their CDs for dirt cheap anyway so Ill buy it regardless. Ill see them at a show and buy some merch. I also share music with my friends and if they get into the band, theyre a new fan. Personally, torrenting for music encourages more fans for said band. When my band finally gets a CD out, were probably either going to give it away for free or sell em for $5 or less.
Then again, my band is NOT my career. If it was, Id probably be complaining a bit more about it.
On a related note, people torrent/share (sometimes sell!) our vector packs. You dont realize how it feels until it directly affects you. Its irritating how much blatant disregard for peoples personal property they have. Its not like I download a bands record and then sell it myself or claim I created the music. No. I get into the band and become a fan and will show my support with cash at their show.

Torrents arent all illegal, just the amount of illegal stuff that is available thru torrents gives the good stuff a bad name.
