I was wondering if anybody knows any tricks for using low res (google images) for making halftones?
I looked around on some other threads but really did see anything about this quetion.
whats the lowest res image youve ever used and had print alright?

Ive used flash "trace bitmap" with mixed results.
volatile v said 5 months ago
Whenever I trace at relatively closed to high detail it flips the hell out and freezes.
Plus, it doesnt do halftones, at least that Im aware of.

Im in need of guidance regarding half-tones as well. Och.
Randomentity said 5 months ago
try copying the layer in photoshop, desaturating it, and running the color halftone filter on it.

Word, then select it and turn it into a work path or something? Just to get the ability to scale it.

Lookit, Id suggest using non-google i.e. copyrighted images in the first place but barring that you can take most images that are relatively lo-res and once theyre converted to bitmaps enlarge them to the size you need without worry.
Youll want to convert the image to greyscale first in order to make it a bitmap. When you convert it select the halftone option.
Youll want a frequency of 55 lines/inch and a 21 degree angle. Make sure the shape is an elipse. Thats what we use at work although the printer we use to print films has its own halftoning. Hope that helps

I hear you on copyrights. Ill try those settings out thanks.

I scale whatever image I want halftones to the size I want the finished product in PS, then I convert it to grayscale, then bitmap image, choose halftone, play with the settings.

doing it in photoshop- can you halftone the layer you want on the same canvas as everything else or do you have to take it to a seperate canvas? thanks
jimiyo said 5 months ago
you can just copy into clipboard, then undo a couple steps before the conversion, and then paste
so no.. although sometimes i open a new one, just to keep separated, and if i need to tweak

all i know about photoshop is what i use- a brush and layers and thats it. It would be nice to have sme other possibilities. Most of you would laugh at how little I know about photoshop and computers in general e.g. what is clipboard?
jimiyo said 5 months ago
CTRL-C
copy. when you copy, the info goes into whats referred to as clipboard.
the paste. CTRL-V
i send you something in email. keeeep secret!

im wondering why my halftones always look like shit
im working at 600 dpi and my halftone dots are just shitty looking always
sblake said 4 months ago
55 dot is the industry standard in screen printing as the smallest you should go. PersionAlly I like a bigger dot like 35 with an angle of 22.5! Angles are important you got to remember a screen in itself is a pattern so if you dots and the screen conflict you will get moiré! Ugly moiré!
Open file in photoshop> convert to grayscale> adjust levels> convert to bitmap tif> plug in your dot/angle settings! Remember a bitmap is designed to be a small filesize so it will display as if it is all baggy and lowers. Print it out at actual size to see what of really looks like.
You can also place your bitmap tif into illustrator and change the colour of it for mocking up purposes. Save for web will give you a realistic preview of how it will look printed!
Im typeing this on my phone so umma stop now!
nate gonz said 4 months ago
haha well i mean i know this much but most the times my halftone "dots" turn into jagged shapes
ive experimented a million times
also when i do it to images it doesnt look right either

and playing with settings
