I always wondered that myself, what can you do, the HDD your backup onto is no different than the one you work on, so either can fail. So how many do you use to backup when any of them can go. I tend to backup certain important things online too, just to be sure. but you cant always do that. I know how you feel, a few months ago I lost my portfolio worth of stuff... it was all crappy stuff, but none the less disappointing.
but if you had a time machine, you would have already gone back in time, and it didnt fix it, so you can only try to go farther back in time this time in an attempt but wouldnt that have already happened... im tired.. lol
my trusted 'mac-pusher' tried every possible trick.
the only way is 'data-rescue' but its too much expensive (800€ for every 20Gb of data rescued).
so Im going to refresh some of my old design by re-drawing them :] (nevernever loose hope, deheheh!).
Bummer man, I had this happen to me a few years ago. Now I keep things Im working on on my macbook and external, and when Im done I either do a double back up (my primary external and one I never use), or backup to my primary external and a dvd.

Oh that sucks..I just had a different yet similar issue in that I somehow lost fonts that now wont let me change original graphic design stuff - so I will technically have to redo a lot of the typo..
corefolio said: I use Leopard(I hatehatehate it! long live to Tiger :]) and time machine doesnt work with an external HD... bbbbuuuuuhhhhhhhh!
Say what? Seems to be working with my machine.... Still wouldnt have helped if the HD you are using for time machine craps out. Ive been using Sugarsync to back up crucial stuff.
Id suggest everyone use some kind of online backup or at least spending $30 on a stack of dvds and burn all that shit from time to time!
Similar thing happened to me 2 months ago. Lost everything on my 500gb WD drive. That same month the 60gb WD my dad uses did the same thing. Needless to say, Im never using their stuff again.

All that is left now is to think of a great way to destroy the failure HD. No? Just a suggestion. It would make ME feel better. *shrug*

Kolby had some bizarro recommendation about putting the drive in the freezer or something. Can you take it to someone who can retrieve the info?

Ive had one that just failed on me about a month ago.. Multiple back ups is the "safer" way.
molasses4masses said 4 months ago
Probably the only complete fail-safe you can do is backup to DVD. Its a pain though.

My recommendation is to sacrifice your soul to satan in return for all the lost data.
