Hey guys!
Im doing a full page ad in Giant Robot later this summer, because, fuck it, I need to start advertising again, and I wanna announce some big-name collabos Ive got going and show off.
I remember reading once that in adverts, the eye goes in like a Z motion from corner to corner.
Does anyone else have any tips on full page ad design? I have done plenty of smaller ads that I thought were pretty successful, but I never had a full page to play with. I was thinking of using this photo:

Or maybe this one:

I could use art from one of my upcoming releases or collabos, but I think a photo might be more effective. I dunno.

how about a topless picture of the girl on the bottom with your logo over the chest or some images from the line. people will notice that one for sure. no needs for zzzzs. but that is true about creating a motion to the advert. you want to be able to control their eye

i think regardless of what people say, big photos of pretty girls will always catch attention. In my opinion the bottom photo displays the design a lot more and its unique looking.

I like the hoodies shot, theres more to choose from if youre not into the one tee.
If its a fashion ad I wouldnt worry about too many rules regarding eye movement and all that milarky. Just keep it simple, and make sure you only have one message. What is the one thing you want people to think when they see your ad? Work backwards from that.
PS. I make ads for a living... thatll be $50 :)

second looks better.
if i were you, id run that photo large. id have a column on the right of other shots with other t shirts, maybe 3 more photos. then at the bottom of the large photo id have your text shit.
like
BBBS
BBBS
BBBS
TTTS
B - big, S - small, T - text

I think the first pic is best. There is more then 1 tee and anyone can take a close up of a girl, thats lame now. The top one also has interaction within the people involved which is good.

Id argue that youll get better cut-through and recall with an ad thats one pic and a logo. Unless youre an awesome layout designer (I have no idea if you are or arent) you could risk looking unprofessional which is one of the worst things to do in a fashion ad.
volatile v said 4 months ago
hey i dont have a clue about any of this, ive never run an ad or anything like it, so what im saying is purely out of speculation and what a complete amateur might try. you would probably be best off following the advice of someone with experience, haha.
Randomentity said 4 months ago
i was thinking about using that bottom photo later.
heeeeey oooooooh!
but seriously if youre advertising in Giant Robot, id go with the second, cuz the design is very much targeted at that market.
the designs in the hoodie pic arent really that eye grabbing.
gameyy said 4 months ago
I think that second shot is best too. To me, it sums up your entire line really well and really represents it. I agree with whoever said to put a column on the far right with some text info, too. Keep it simple, but definitely give them more than just the photo and logo.
Randomentity said 4 months ago
something like that?
LuckyStripes said 4 months ago
Keep it simple, like this.
volatile v said 4 months ago
something like this is what i saw

And this?

Im studying to become an art director in advertising. What RikkiB said about having only one message is really important. So many times I see my classmates trying to put to much in an ad and it just ends up making no sense at all.
There really needs to be something that will catch someones attention when theyre flipping through the pages. Either have an attention getting headline with a straight forward picture or the other way around. Right now the photo isnt telling me very much, and is a little boring to tell you the truth.
One idea going off the ice wizard jacket is to have a monster wearing it. I think that would be a cool attention getter.
Your zombie hunters shirt I think is the easiest one to attract attention. A bloody mess of zombie hunters and zombies would look amazing. If I saw an add like that I would definitely check out the site.
heavyprints said 4 months ago
I think that lighting is kind of harsh for an ad. You needed to get some light coming in from the left side also.
LuckyStripes said 4 months ago
I hear ya -- the color is all off because of the convert when I downsized it for Emptees viewing..

just have
BUY SEIBEI CLOTHING
in big letters filling a page no links or info its so pretentious people are bound to think its cool : ]
jelly said 4 months ago
I like the 2nd one.
-its witty
-and I get it
seibei said 4 months ago
damn guys thanks for all of the advice!
Im half-tempted to draw something for the ad, like a monster wearing some stuff, etc, but Im so busy printing stuff on working on new designs that I might only have time for a photo one.
once I whip up some stuff, Ill post it here.

oooh, now a clipping mask of text aint a bad idea at all. not absolute seibei (sorry dude), but maybe something else? very interesting...

just
SEI
BEI
volatile v said 4 months ago
if the background was white i think it would look better, it didnt really flow for me with the black bg
Randomentity said 4 months ago
haha, that was just a joke anyways, you know..the whole...absolut.thing..yeah...i was just using it as an example.
just
SEI
BEI
would be cool though.
sentimentaladam said 4 months ago
I like the idea of this one.
I would move your logo off of the girl into the bottom right hand corner
seibei said 4 months ago
heres something rough I kicked out:
Truman325i said 4 months ago
Seems a little too broken up.
That is me though
gameyy said 4 months ago
Agreed. I think
SEI
BEI
would work better. Try it!
volatile v said 4 months ago
i dont think the clipping mask works because you spend too much time trying to figure out the two things and dont really focus on either.
gameyy said 4 months ago
Actually, I think thats the exact reason it does work. Makes your viewer take the time to look it over and figure it out. More viewing time is a good thing!
seibei said 4 months ago
yeah, I think I want people to at least puzzle over it for a second. Here are some with just SEIBEI:
I kind of want to announce some cool collabos coming up, but I dont wanna crowd too much info in there at once...well see. maybe some small text in the corner?
dsprad said 4 months ago
I think thats excellent. It catches the eye and is short and simple, to the point.
gameyy said 4 months ago
The white one is great!
As for the collabs, you might just do "Seibei.com" on the left and on the right, "feat. X, X, & X" (fill in the "X"s with the logos of the dudes youre collabing with. Because if folks know who they are, theyll know the logo, and if they dont, at least the logos will look cool to them, and better than just plain text)
seibei said 4 months ago
hmmm, little logos would look cool - I know at least one of them (Josh Longo) has a logo, but not sure about Will Bryant, Derek M Ballard, or Hellen Jo...
thanks guys! I didnt expect such a big reaction to this.
quakerninja said 4 months ago
Use the boobs Luke.
Use. The. Boobs.
gameyy said 4 months ago
I dunno why, but its really fun to help out with this kind of stuff. Plus Seibei is rad.
Randomentity said 4 months ago
seibei ripped me off!
seibei said 4 months ago
I do have some model shots that are heavy on boobs, but I dont think theyd work as well for this.
Thanks for the idea, dude!
Randomentity said 4 months ago
haha, anytime.
looks good.

I AM an art director in advertising!
Huzzah for the advertising profession, keep at it, its an awesome job and Id highly recommend it. Where are you studying?
Ameeee said 4 months ago
First photo - it has a sense of fun about it. Which I think a lot of your shirts have. Seibei has a cool range and I think representing it with the second photo may pigeon hole the brand. I dont know, Im no advert. expert but I see more of a brand connection with the first one. Go with humour - you do that really well :)
Jon Kruse said 4 months ago
LA, at this finishing school called the book shop. Ive been there for a year and Ive got about a year left.
Do you have any of your professional work? Id love to see it.
RikkiB said 4 months ago
Ill see what I can find tomorrow and send it over the old email wires :)
seibei said 4 months ago
so what do you professionals think of the latest version of the ad?
RikkiB said 4 months ago
I like the latest black one :)
I quite like the other image though, did you give that a shot in the layout?
collisiontheory said 4 months ago
I really like the latest white one!
eprowell said 4 months ago
i like the last white one too! its the easiest on the eyes.
seibei said 4 months ago
I am gonna toy around with it a bit and try a few different photos underneath it - I think there might be too much going on it the first one to work with the letter thing, but well see! thanks so much, everyone!
YOU GUYS ARE THE BESSSSST HUGGGGGGGZZZZ
kyleisez said 4 months ago
yea I wanna see what you do, I have a ad due in 10 days, Im pretty certain what I want to do though
seibei said 4 months ago
geez you probably design more ads in one day than I have in my entire life, but hopefully I wont disappoint.
Jon Kruse said 4 months ago
I think the ads need the tag "put a monster in your closet". Just small right next to your website.
