Designer’s block...

posted 3 months ago by herman

I haven’t made a single design I liked for more than a month.

Have any of you guys been through a month long designer’s block? How did you come through it?

thats how i was, i was really lacking on designing, maybe like 2-3 designs in about 2 months maybe 3. and then this past weekend i made about 15 different designs, just to get a bunch of ideas down and get back in the game.

you just gotta get in the mindset, and wanna start designing again.

try a new style or technique even if you have to mimic something. then make it yours and the growth will make you feel like youre growing. but thats my method. im going for a rikkib doodlely jimiyo style the next round. hopefully ill learn something.

how the hell is hung kong!?

I’ll definitely give your suggestion a try!

Its pretty good in HK. My allergies are getting better. Instead of using 1/2 a box of kleenex everyday, I’ve reduced it to probably 1/4 now.

I was thinking about the same thing. But I’m in the process of looking for a full time job.

true. My mindset right now is half lazy half uninspired.

Dude I have a folder in my laptop that says "INSPIRATION". It contains all the porn in the world. Lol but no I do have a folder and it has hundreds of jpgs of all the works of all other artists/designers that inspire me. It has everything from 70s rock posters, street art, arabic calligraphy, works of painters, T-shirt designs, etc.

So basically anytime I go to any website and find a really cool work or style I just place it on the folder. When designer’s block hits me I just open it up and take a peek. Sometimes the best way to get out of a rut is just by looking at tons of visual stimuli. Works every time. A great place to start is www.ffffound.com.

By the way, what kind of full time job are you looking for?

i take a short break.. like 2-3 weeks. So my mind is refreshed and full of ideas because stress is what gets to me most. after that amount of time, i have a sudden urge to design furiously and thats when i start wizzing with pencil and paper so easily because im 100% sure what im drawing!

i can’t say I have my ideas usually come from ideas I read or see on TV. My newest one is from Americas dance crew. The show sucks but I was watching the other day and anyway wait and see.

what I do is change mediums completely.... if I am stuck with a shirt design I just work on a web site for the day or two, if its web design I work on a poster... just keep the mind moving.

    maybe buy some new books.

I had a slump a couple months back and started re-vistiting some old work that I felt I could improve now, that seemed to spark something for me.

Man, AJ, I think we both have a similar work flow. Saving JPGS and FFFFound.

I’m actually interviewing for a design job at a local streetwear label (lots of hype in HK). So hopefully, everything works out.

I don’t have a habit of carrying a sketch book. Maybe I should start to now, haha.

Definitely. Sometimes, tee designs limits your creativity.

I bought a new book last week called "Type Addicted". Pretty good for inspiration.

I try listening to different kinds of music and then creating a piece using some of the lines in a song or base it from just the feel of the music. I don’t know why but each time I do that I always seem to get inspired.

I also have an inspiration folder like CollisionTheory that helps. Maybe even just take a break and not do anything for a week and just observe your surroundings... that is if you can afford to do that.

This will be the cheesiest sounding suggestion, but what I have done is remodeled my office. It takes about a day and the new surroundings are energizing.

The streetwear scene here is pretty huge in HK. Bape, BBC/Ice Cream, Neighborhood, Undefeated, OriginalFake, Stussy, etc. and the local ones such as Know1edge, Clot, Subcrew, AAAA, etc.
