ehhhhh. i’m not a fan of the name or the branding in general- just nothing that makes me think i’d want to wear something produced by that company. it would be cool if it was like... gum? i say just take your time on it dude, you’ve only had like 2 days to rethink this whole thing, rome wasn’t built in a day.

i think you can still use avant, but paired with another word. my suggestion was avant movement, but it might not be your direction. that avant company is on "hiatus til september" aka, their parents took them out of town for the summer. its not some mega company like the snowboard one

theres a name for everything out there.

As for the no research thing.. I have been doing research I never said this name was locked down but after a quick trademark search and google search avant fresh clothing had no relevant hits..

I would also like to add that I think you should focus more on creating OUTSTANDING designs first that people will love before even considering selling shirts and being a brand. Just give yourself time, eventually your brand will come fall on your head and it will be perfect and represent everything thats about you and your art. Yeah... can’t rush things like this, nurture your art and your business like a wounded dove. Sorry, I stole that from a Bright Eyes song.

not to be a dick, but you should work on googling your name ideas.

avant clothing came up on the first page of typing "avant clothing" in google.

think of something then google it, then continue with branding and identity developement. would have saved you the lost time with 32 as well.

keep brainstorming though, you’ve got the drive so i’m sure you’ll make something happen.

I think some people here have a strange notion of branding in the context of designer t-shirts and clothing lines as a whole. I think you’re forgetting the identity part of Branding and Identity which work together but are two seperate things. Your particular brand should have it’s own identity but your identity shouldn’t be defined by your brand (I’m using Brand here in the emptees context i.e. Logo).

Paul Rand designed the IBM logo (think about those lines) to aesthetically convey a certain image for that company that’s lasted even until now. Think long term like someone above said. IBM used that and branded themselves with it but but their products (here it’d be your tshirts and designs) aren’t the letters IBM with a computer screen mounted on top. Ultimately it was a simple mark that let you know who was responsible for it and conveyed something of their aesthetic but it wasn’t the product itself. Am I making sense?

Try delving into what you want to produce aesthetically first.
I happen to like the Trey Deuce angle. Johnny Cupcakes and Shepard Fairey both started their respective empires based on an inside joke among friends.
We call what happened next a 'happy accident'. (Personally I say Balls to Obey but that’s another thread). And so what if it’s ghetto? Run with it. I happen to think cupcake crossbones look ridiculous but that was the point and now every body calls it high fashion.

Anyways stop obsessing over your logo (which I’d advise against plastering all over your shirts until it’s well known) and develop your identity. Who are you? I’m sure when Paul Rand sat at the drawing board he asked himself the same thing about IBM.

Exactly! One reason that there are so many floundering Big Cartel/Myspace clothing lines out there is that people think if they make a logo and stick it on a bunch of stuff, people will fall in love with their brand, but it doesn’t work that way. Sure, their friends and family may buy in the outset to support them, but beyond that small circle they never find success. The reason is that people fall in love with things they can attach themselves to - cool designs, cool personalities behind them, not cool logos.

I’d almost go so far as to say that the actual names matters very little. It’s about what’s behind it that counts.

That said, if I had to make a choice, I’d say "Trey Deuce" is your best one. It’s catchy, easy to remember, and describes you. This can be a big plus in the long run because you can be the face of your brand. And people like that sort of thing, because again, it enables them to attach to it.

  43. Perudoesitbetter - Alan avatar

    Perudoesitbetter said 4 months ago

    well said.

I think that is the biggest reason people find it so hard to succeed. You really cant just shlap a logo on a tee and expect to rise the ranks of popularity so quickly. It takes time and takes more than a well crafted logo.

You have to build your brand, eventually you’ll find direction with what works for you and your brand. But it takes time and you can’t expect people to get "it" right off the bat. You must introduce, entice, and ultimately convince the consumer.

but, eric says it much better than I can. lol.

what does 'avant movement' have to do with your clothing line? I think every clothing line likes to think of itself as new and cutting edge, and throwing the odd revolutionary term or a term for an organized group of people like 'movement' or 'cartel' or 'obey' or 'rebel' in there sounds cool but it’s totally generic and I can’t imagine anyone in 10 years talking about the new 'avant movement' line.
No offense my friend, I’m just trying to help. The companies I mentioned before make it look and sound so easy to just come up with a cool name and start designing things under it. But the creation of good design and art, be it corporate identity, fashion, or a website, takes time, thought, maybe a happy accident or two and a solid concept and that will all lead you to substance. I’m still waiting to hear what your company/line means to you and what you think it will represent to others. Who is your target audience? What’s their demographic? Do you specialize in just printed tees or do you delve into ancillary goods like jewelry and patches and buttons and things? And how does that personify your brand?
A quick visit to your site told me nothing about who or what your company is.
What’s your mission statement (not that you need to post one but for conversation’s sake)? Do you want to bring us "the latest in *insert style here*" for "people who *do this sort of stuff here*"?
It’s funny you should write that what I posted was deep. I just want to see more people treating design like the trade that it is. I don’t like the mindset that a lot of commercials on TV present that "not an artist? don’t worry! you don’t have to be anymore!"
Like design in itself is just another As Seen On TV anybody-can-do-it thing.
I don’t mean to be down on you personally, your website is loads better than mine and I don’t even have my own business. I just hope that you’ll take some of this advice and cultivate what you’ve got going on. You’ve obviously got the ambition and a good start and you’re not that bad a designer.
I hope this has been more of a help than a negative rant.

I started my venture into T-shirt ''Business'' in late 2007, im still tuning up and havent printed anything(no logo), but i want to figure everything out before the launch, so maybe you should first make identity and only after that send designs into print(as i remember you told somewhere you ordered something). avant movement does actually mean something to me. before when i had 32 i was just doing tees, that is all we planned to do for a long time, and it obviously didnt work for us (never had one online sale // only in person) avant movement to me means a move toward more cutting edge and "out there" designs.

we will always do tees no doubt, but i want to do more than that i have already contact local people in the area from whom i can get patterns made and stuff like that for cut and sew. i want to be more than just a tee line.. so AMC to me is a move to a better market.. still street wear but not just heres a "dope" design buy it

thanks for all of your input it is much appreciated

    with outreydeuce you have 2 problems;

spelling - people will struggle to type it because it’s unusual, assume everyone is retarded.

it sounds too similar when said to "outrageous", which loops back to the first point..

    well how is tradus?

If it was pronounced TRAD-US you couldn’t really spell it wrong, but i think your moving away from what you had inspiration to create, your idea was based around 32 bars in a song right? Why not relate it to something '32 based' - this could get geeky!!

Keep your reason behind the branding the same, keep the inspiration you had to create your brand, if you have no inspiration you’ll fall at the sidelines..

Let me give you some research (ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/32_(number))

    Something like this;
In chess, the total number of black squares on the board, the total number of white squares, and the total number of pieces (black and white) at the beginning of the game.

you could work from, especially as your going for streetwear i believe? It could have a none direct secondary meaning - bringing racial discrimination to a minimum through music.. (32 bars+chess)

I dunno, a chess board shows equality, so you could get good ethics for working with that concept. Something which will build brand reputation!
