It seems to be miles cheaper than the UK but if i get a load of taxes and stuff added on when it gets here then i dont know if it will be worth it.
godmachine said 2 months ago
I think if you ask them to post it as 'gift' you should avoid al that tax gubbins.

OooOOoooOooo when will that be?
ChristianTW said 2 months ago
you should have to pay duty(on 100% cotton, usually around 15-18%). But what should be done and what is often done are usually two different stories.

I think i will be joing with you on using us printers. lets be fair are the english good at anythink.
Backfire said 2 months ago
Well the US printers do the larger prints for fair prices, but if we get charged taxes by our bloody government when they arrive then it pushes the price right up!
i came from nothing said 2 months ago
if you get taxes you will pay double (any marked price on the package will be doubled up by customs), but im yet to get any import taxes so far, just dont use UPS or FED EX air mail shipping, just use USPS.
Backfire said 2 months ago
Ahhh thats good because i will be using USPS.

Hey...
Our printers are US based.
VAT you don't have to worry about (although there is local sales tax in some states etc) but Duty is a bitch!
Completely random and entirely down to HM C&E's description form what I can tell.
If you're just looking to get a big box of stock sent to you then you might well be ok, but in theory for clothing you need to pay duty on anything over the cost of £18 I believe.
Give them a call - they are really helpful on the phone:

You do have to pay VAT.
"offically" anything over £18 entering the UK from the USA you have to pay 17.5 % VAT plus duty, which for cotton tees will be around 12% (as Christain mentioned). This is VAT including your delivery charge. So T-shirt cost + delivery + duty + VAT.
Our government kick you in the balls big time.
This is the offical way. If the company mark it as gift when it isn't and they get caught then they can be prosecuted and you will have to pay duty.
I started out years ago by importing tees from america in batches of around 30 - 60 , and 1 parcel every 3 months. I would guess it was a 60/40 ratio that i got charged customs etc (thats 60% getting ccharged). Royal mail add on a ridulous charge too for "handling fees".
So i changed to USPS for delivery, it was a £200 order and i got a phone call from USPS wanting my Registered VAT no, so i quickly had to learn what a TURN number was and get one from customs. During this time my goods were being held by USPS at a charge of £11 per day (and that was like 3 years ago).
Importing from the USA is a good way of business, and i'm not trying to put you off but if you do it on a regular basis you will have to pay the duty, VAT etc. Just don't want you to get a horrible surprise!!
One tip, if they do mark it as a gift then get them to send the invoice in a separate envelope which is posted separately, then if customs open the box there is no invoice. But they will still charge you anyway i expect!!!!
hope this helped, really not here to put you off, but you gotta factor in things just in case
hunty said 2 months ago
My bad... VAT = worry.
:/
Backfire said 2 months ago
What do i do if i dont have a VAT number and i get into that situation?
Half a Job Jeans said 2 months ago
You have to get something called a Pseudo TURN number (TURN Trader's Unique Reference Number).
Here's the link on how to get one:
http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageLibrary_ShowContent&id=HMCE_PROD_008113&propertyType=document
It's so customs can keep an eye on who's importing what.
It took around 7 days to get mine (but thats like an eternity when you are desparate for it). If you ever get in the situation when you need one it can be applied for on-line.
Good luck, before you know it you'll be importing 1000's :)
Hunty yeah VAT= pain in the butt !!! :)
Backfire said 2 months ago
God is there seriously no way around this?
Its such a flaming rip off
I have decided im moving to the states in a few years lol
So much easier and better run.
jimmyheartcore said 2 months ago
I usually just mark the shirts down to like $1.50 each and mark it as a gift
Then your import taxes should be like ... really cheap. Or nothing if they accept the "gift".
Backfire said 2 months ago
Cheers Jimmy, all answers sorted =]
Half a Job Jeans said 2 months ago
Backfire - personally i think the rules & regs here make it insane and so much harder for anyone trying to import.
It's abit like a fishermans friend suck it and see what happens. I very much doubt they will want a TURN number, but best to be aware :)
Let us know how you get on
M.Eureka said 2 months ago
Jimmy, I wish every printers were as nice as you are ;)
Backfire said 2 months ago
The UK really does suck at everything to do with this industry, like only one convention, stupidly high prices, nothing like warped tour and bloody customs
Grrrr
