I have come up with a theory to prove this as true because no one wants to admit they drive faster around home. Why am I doing this, no clue, I am a tad stressed at work and I need to waste some energy on something pointless so here it goes:
Why do they say they happen closest to home? because you are so familiar with the streets you think you can do it in your sleep. So how is this any different than typing? I have a few key words that I type all the time, literally hundreds of times a day it feels like and what do you know, they are my most common misspelled words. Is it because they are difficult? no. Because they are too long? nope. Its all because I am so assured that my fingers will land in the right place that I speed through typing it.
So what would my most common misspelled words be. First off, google.com! This one comes out in several different variations from my finger tips. The most commons would be googl.com and google.cmo, with the occasional goglle.com (but that one is when I have too much coffee, accounts for the extra twitch).
The second, the name of our company. Synapse. Be it our web address or just typing it into an email I always get this one wrong. It always ends up being We Are Syanpse. Drives me insane.
So what was the point of this... I dont know, a waste of time or a slight distraction from work for a few minutes to enjoy the music I have going on. But what can we learn? No idea, im still going to type just as fast and drive the same speed I do. I just wanted to point it out.
peace

actually -- I use the "Home" button to go to Google. and I have Fast Dial set up so I dont have to type out "myspace.com" or "emptees.com/talk" or "facebook.com" etc. laziness ftw.

So, I didnt read the whole post, but you also spend more time in the area close to your house then at some distance. People go to closer stores, restaurants, etc.
Logical right? I hope so. Im distracting myself from work too.

haha, exactly. You know the area closest to your house so you go faster, cut corners, etc just like you try and do while you type. The worlds you are familiar with are the same thing....
guitar players can also relate. On certain riffs I play they are so ingrained in that if I try and think about what I am doing I mess up and forget how to play it. I.E. "classical gas". I can play it if I just sit down and start, but if I try and think about what I am doing I always mess up.

Leaving familiarity out of the equation. You also spend more time in areas close to your house, so, the probability is higher that you would get in a crash there.
I agree about the familiarity thing, but figured Id introduce another component.
Also, I apologize for the science-talk terms, Im up to my ass in research articles.

I have a habit of typing words at the beginning of sentences LIke THis because I hold on the shift too long. That being said, I also seem to commonly end up with googlec.om and googl.ecom more than just google.com.

this one is very simple....Aniast is right.
the most accidents happen close to home because that is where you are the most.
just statistics
just as if you spend all of you time driving on a specific deliver route...naturally that is the most likely place you would be involved in an accident.
