I don’t see a reason that would keep me out my bed for three to four days for a t-shirt from any brand. Plus don’t they have to get off to use the bathroom and were to they take a bath at lol

It’s not a terrible part of town but I wouldn’t want to sleep there.

Parking is usually pretty bad in that area, but they don’t charge you after 6 at the meters.

Dudette, Johnny Cupcakes is more than just a t-shirt brand or store, for us JC heads it’s a lifestyle. He is the living breathing Willy Wonka and this store is a real life chocolate factory. This opening raised the bar for a store opening. It was a media-frenzy/summer blockbuster opening day!

for those who want to see the swag... all my shirts are still in their plastic wrapping. I’ll post pics when I open them.

The real life willy wonka factory is in PN in this city called Hersheys. As for the media-frenzy....maybe because I know how the magic trick is done its just not that big of a deal...I am a HUGE gucci fan but I dont camp out in thier stores. I just dont understand.

Its not just JC I dont understand the concept of camping out for anything material. I dont understand how people can sleep in walmart for a videogame that will be there the next day. I got my Wii a week after it came out...no line...no wait.

don’t get me wrong, i am NOT hating, i am very happy for johnny and anyone who is successful at what they do...

buuuut am i the only one who thinks this thing is pretty corny? the whole getting delivered in a box entrance is kind of embarassing. it really seems like a lot more time and effort went into the store than the actual clothing. not to mention this is not a new concept. it’s pretty much exactly the same concept as the BBC/ice cream store in NYC and Dave’s Quality Meat had a similar thing going well before that.

    Photobucket

all i’m saying is, this whole thing seems really disney-esque and kinda turns me off from the actual clothing being sold. just my opinion. anyone else feel this way?

Not picking based on a like of one brand over the other. Picking on the work you can see put in to each design and the style that it holds hands down Johnny Cupcakes has it

While there are similarities between both the JC and BBC brands, I believe Johnny established the core look of his store before the BBC store was built. Johnny’s first store was opened in 2004 while I believe BBC was created in 2005. So Johnny has established himself before BBC did.

Johnny himself admitted on his webisodes that he worked with a company that worked with multiple theme parks including Disneyland to create the look and feel of the Johnny Cupcakes store in LA, but the store is a hyperstylized version of what the Johnny Cupcakes brand is all about. I think this attracts me more than say compared to a store that only displays and merchandises their store in a way where you just shop. From personally shopping in the new LA store, I feel that this shop is not a shop, it’s a f*cking living breathing shopping theme-ride thrill (!!!). For those of you who will be lucky enough to actually shop at the store, you’ll eventually learn the politics of what it’s like to be a JC head. From Boston’s Stoop Crew (LA’s first 20 customer’s have yet to name themselves) to the annual Halloween release insanity, LA has alot in store for themselves. No one on Melrose has opened to this much fandemonium and I doubt anyone ever will again.

completely agree with this, i remember going to the mall the day after the iphones were out, people were lined up the whole day. the next day, people lined up again. i don’t get that, like you said, it’s going to be there in a week.

however, i think it’s pretty cool that people line up for an indie clothing line, clearly jc’s doing something right.

JC aesthetic is just waaaaay too kiddie for me. i think it will work out well for him, but there really isn’t much inspiring about cartoon cake batter shooting out of the walls. reminds me of toon lagoon.

there is just no real style/swagger to that stuff. this, on the other hand, is what i call a store...

Well I see what you are getting at SWH and to a certain extent I’d definitely agree with you. I love JC’s stuff for sure and his designs are great when strictly in the context of the his core theme and communicating that message which he does very well.

Personally I believe it really is more about the experience of entering the store and it’s visceral aspect that really engages the consumer. It’s definitely been done before, but it is still refreshing in the sense that everyone at some point has probably been to Disney world/Land and would rather go there than some local amusement park. Kiddie, I suppose...but hey I’m sure we all have some kid left in us.

The flickering flames on the oven "counter top" and the giant green oven doors are pretty radical. It’s awesome Johnny is able to be so creative with his art and carry out all these crazy ideas, I’m super stoked for him!

ps The frosting reminds me of Big World level 4 in Super Mario Brothers, which is good. One of my all time fave levels...
