Do you think our name sucks?

posted 11 months ago by ironyboy

Hey guys,

I don’t know how many of you are aware of "Fair and Bare", our competition site run in the uk, but we’ve been running it for a couple of months now.

I’m just wondering how many of you would be turned off because of our name - primarily chosen for our "tree huggin" ethics. A close, successful friend whom I trust mentioned he didn’t think that we should focus on that in our title, that it should be an additional over and above the awesome designs we’re producing.

If that’s the case then would anyone have any better suggestions? I’ve been registering domains with a view to maybe changing it, but they all don’t seem to be the best they could. I’d love it to be personal - I’m British, drink milky tea, and do work under the pseudonym nifty digits, I’m also writing up a doctorate too. There’s more (somewhat outdated) info here.

Any help and comments from your own experience would really be appreciated.

Many thanks people.

I like the name but your image and website design need an overhaul.

I agree with Jon..it kind of screams student environmental blog. IMO though, not meaning to sound harsh.

Yeah, I don’t want to come across like that - but its difficult to strike a balance with two types of people I guess...i.e environmental peeps and tee lovers...

I have to say I tried submitting and it didn’t work 3 times so I gave up and submitted it elsewhere. Maybe I’ll try again.

Fair And Bare sounds like a perfectly good name to me.

Im not a fan of "fair and bare" its a bit too "organic" sounding?

I personally would go for a different name that perhaps is not based on the fair trade theme BUT try and come up with a catch slogan or something.

A shit example would be a sandwich shop where I live that is called "picnics" but everyone thinks its called "the big baguette". Something to do with their sign saying picnics and then on the line below it says home of the big baguette.

    I know what I mean.

Also with the fair and bare, the word bare kinda means no t-shirt? Maybe I am missing something there?

I think its great what you are doing though :-)

does the name really have to reflect the cause?
look at howies.co.uk - they have a very solid grounding in eco friendly wear, but the name would never give it away, and it comes across in how they promote themselves as an overall brand.

i think any cool sounding name will work, then promote your vaulues as part of the site content.

Exactly what I’ve been pondering - are the cool kids going to shun us because of it?

Yup, that’s right - as in you’d come to us if you didn’t have one.

    I like the product shots.

Just from a design standpoint your logo is serif typeface that could be kerned a bit. The whole site lacks emotion and some of your colors like the blues yellows and purples on your product page don’t fit in with everything else.

If you want to shed the tree hugging image take a step away from the green.

Maybe get rid of the "and" then you could rip off carebears with the fairbears. You could make a weekly TV show of yourself going on strange but interesting adventures with the fairbears.

Video number one could be "The Fairbears Picnic". The possibilities would be endless.

You could make little t-shirts of the winning design up for the fairbears to wear!

I would check back every week to watch the videos :-)

    fair & bare

I love it. To me it sounds like an upscale high end name. Like one of those brands that pays millions upon millions to be in every magazine and we all look at the AD asking ourselves, 'I have never seen somebody wear this out in public!?'

Hopefully I am not the only one who feels the same way.

Howies was actually the example my friend gave me, so hence the question. I guess its the way people interpret the name - here in the UK we might get looked upon as hippies, but elsewhere it might not automatically get that association.

I do not think your name sucks, in a boat, with a goat, or in the rain or on a train, fair and bare, I dare say, matters not the name. Just like Steven said, any cool name will work just the same.
