china town is fun. fishermans warf is fun. lombard streets tight. castro is interesting. pretty much everything along embarcadero is cool. union is a pretty cool shopping area. fancy schmancy.
i just moved here so i cant tell you much because i am trying to figure this out too....but i have been to the warf cool place to check out..union square has all kinds of stuff/shopping
Man we just left SF yesterday, its awesome. I recommend Muir Woods if you can be bothered or are into National Parks and all that stuff.. the biggest oldest tallest trees you ever did see. Check out Slims for some good bands too. And if youre going to Alcatraz book waaay in advance.. sells out super fast. Go to Sausilito as well, so nice there and, in my case, humbling/depressing to know that id never be able to afford to buy a house there.
Haight & Ashbury is pretty cool too, if you can get past all the Robocop 3 street punks..
Haight street is super rad. There is an upper and lower haight with a bunch of blocks of not much in between so make sure you check both. Its got Upper Playground, kid robot, amoeba records and about a million other really sick shops and really cool bars and dank foodables
Haight Street : TONS of hipsters, cool stores, great people watching, good food. Haight runs into the Golden Gate Park...
Golden Gate Park : GIANT fucking park, with lots of great vegetation and hippies smoking weed and people playing soccer and shit like that. lots of times on weekends theres random stuff going on.
Mission St. : where all the hipsters go to drink at bars. hit up the "Zeitgeist".
Pier 39 : piers. sort of touristy, but worth checking out. theres tons of sea lions sitting on the docks chilling out in the sun, and they bark at each other and its fun to point at them and name them.
Treasure Island : its the island that the bay bridge crosses over. EXCELLENT view of san francisco and downtown, alcatraz, the golden gate, etc.
Marin Headlands : On the other side of the golden gate bridge...theres these abandoned military bunkers from the 50's on the hillside overlooking the ocean and the golden gate bridge and the beach. awesome for smoking bowls lol
japantown : i go there with friends for drunken karaoke. the mall is cool too. get the spam musabi. if you are into anime or manga u will really like it there.
castro : go there if you are gay lol....but honestly, there are some awesome resturaunts there and some really good venues for shows around that area that arnt necessarily "gay" (ie. straight people hang out...i saw the lovemakers (band) there a little while ago)
north beach : super preppy and a bit douchebaggish. good italian food tho.
the marina : near north beach, sort preppy too, but on the water, nice grass area, great for walks.
Underneith the golden gate bridge : a cool spot to check out and look at the ocean and golden gate
The Fillmore : SUPER famous venue, my fav place to check out shows. they pass out a free poster for every show. (i tried getting freelance work designing posters for shows but the list of designers wanting to work dirt cheap for them is endless)

In N Out Burger. If you search San Francisco I think there were some good suggestions when I asked the same question a while back.
