Printers/Sellers in California: Laws

posted 2 months ago by GhostBird

Any body have any tips for what to do as far as the laws go in California, we started out there when we were smaller, but now that we are bigger and want to move back we need to be completely legitimate. If you have any heads up or tips I’d appreciate it.
We print and sell online just for a reference point.

I think you have to acquire a business ID for tax purposes. Mainly, the good ol' government is concerned about getting their share of the monies so as long as you have your ID and fill out your forms quarterly, you’re good to go. I think the only way you can get around the taxes is if you aren’t selling material goods (i.e. sending design files through email/ftp versus sending the client a disc... because the disc counts as a material good).

yeah, the Business ID sounds like the easy part, it is all the manufacturing stuff that worries me, we have the full shop set up, and print it all ourselves, we are going to be moving to san diego, and want to get a warehouse and all that jazz so we don’t want to get fucked. according to the interwebs they can show up at your space and take all your clothes and machines if you aren’t registered correctly.

This is the part where you hire a lawyer to make sure you don’t make any small mistakes with huge repercussions. Good luck! :-)

haha that wont happen. the government doesn’t really care what you do unless someone complains about you or you are doing something illegal. SD is amazing though!

Yeah I lived in SD for five years, we moved up here in january to give our full time to the company and it has gon great, we are moving down there at the end of september and I was just wanting to take care of legal stuff early.
If we had to stop production it would suck ass, we print our little hearts out, i just want to make sure we are legit.
