<body>I've been wanting to write a book about the death of art in America for a while now...guess that's another thing I can mark off my list for now...have to read this one first...

Art just doesn't work in a culture solely based on capitalism...eventually all Art becomes advertising in our type of society...our culture lost it's focus years ago (and went totally awal in the horrible Reagan years)...

America is slowly destroying all greatness in general..it's all about mainstream these days (there's nothing great about 90% of the music you hear on the pop stations)...and if there is anything to be known about great men and women it's that they are everything but mainstream...just ask Chomsky...

an insurance salesman is a more respected member of the community than an artist is...something really wrong with that, just because your status in society in America is almost solely based upon the amount of income you bring in, and nothing else (which is why so many 'respected' members of the community end up being really bad people...like Madoff, or those judges in Pennsylvania that were putting kids away so that they could take home an extra couple mill a year in bribe money from the privatized penal system--and yes, I said penal...we can all laugh...I know I did). Given this, I'm not saying an artist is somehow superior to a salesperson, because on a human level that's just not true at all (Khalil Gibran noted this in his book 'The Prophet'), but an artist is at least creating something, whereas a salesman is just a middleman, providing nothing of their own to the economy...so on an economic standpoint it doesnt make sense)...

Art isn't dead, and maybe never will be as long as the big guy still creates creative people like most of us, but it's definitely malnutritioned at the moment...and people arent paying much attention to that fact...</body>

<body>part of the blame has to go to the public school systems in America...Art appreciation is at the absolute bottom of the barrel in terms of funding...

In the bible belt you'd have a hard time even finding a high school that has much of any art appreciation courses...

can't really speak to the status in private schools, as I am a total product of the crappy public institutions (even college, which was horrible at best)...</body>

Similar case here in my country. People don't want to come near an art show/gallery, thinking they'd be charged an entrance fee. There's just not much effort to push Art Appreciation in education here. In fact, I think they've already taken Art class from the list of subjects in most schools. </body>

<body>Some of the best docs to watch the rise and death of an artform are the graffiti documentaries. From it's rise, to sprite using poor attempts to gain "street credibility."

The word sellout is thrown around so quickly once someone makes it, and instantly a former group of fans will turn away and become haters.

Artists during Dada and Pop Art were basically celebrities. Look at Warhol....that guy rose to a status of icon so quickly. Not many people could even name a contemporary artist that isn't sold in hallmark stores.

Take a look at the Shepard Fairley Obama poster....I bet 99% of American's could say they recognize that poster, but at least 95% of them would have no idea what Obey is.

Ohh well.</body>

<body>on a similar note, if you ask an Architect why the general population likes to buy these Mccrappy Mansions these days where space is more important than quality, efficiency or aesthetics they will tell you that its the fault of the architects not educating the population about the better choices available in new building..

so maybe in a similar way it's the Artists' fault for not educating the population about the importance of Art in culture...</body>

<body>Also, I don't think art is dead. It may be dying or just changing shape. If art was dead, there would be no artists currently living...and there is plenty. As long as people are alive and doing what they love and expressing themselves, I don't think art can be dead. When life dies, art will as well.</body>

<body>It's just a different play ground with completely outdated rules, and to a certain extent outdated players.

Musicians lead the way with remix's. I think that visual art is not far behind. Or was ever behind, just not as controversial,
because A) Visual arts (graphics crap) are not owned by major corporations like the record labels.
B) Generally speaking we are poor and not worth going after. (unless you are SWH)

It's just building on the past. Taking popular movie posters then making them robot cops, or taking popular comic covers and adding pizza. The gray area comes with, how much of a change is needed to justify the adder putting there name on it and selling it. legal would have you say none at all, no matter what it is. A big fat Fuck no. Creatives would tell you it depends, on the quality, idea, execution, everyone does it, ect, ect, ect.

I don't care as long as it's not making the original dude a homeless trash eating bum or something like that by taking away his idea and thus incomes.

People are not as artarded as I like to think. At least I hope not. It dosen't take a genius to know what looks good. People should be able to tell what's been re hashed well and what is just a sloppy lazy mess.

I don't know what I'm talking about, what was the question.

<body>I think this book looks so dumb (and the minidocumentary did nothing to make me want to read it, turned me off actually). It's like what SWH and Quaker are saying, the medium is changing and that sucks for those that were making a living by painting, sculpting, etc. But you cannot blame people for not knowing who their favorite artist is. If you don't like that artists are not thrust into the spotlight, go on tour like the musicians you are comparing them to.

In no way is art dead. In fact, it is thriving. While it is irritating that every kid in high school has a clothing company or is a "graphic designer", the fact is, there is more interest in it now than there ever has been. It seems like every kid has Photoshop (legal or illegal) and knows how to use it. I remember when I was in highschool 12 years ago and no one even knew what Photoshop was. The medium has changed and some will adapt and others will sit back and complain. It is simply supply and demand and if there is no demand for a certain medium, then tough luck, that is business. I don't think it is a lack of respect or putting down of art because no one wants to buy your painting or does not know who you are. I just think artists (including some on this site at times) need to get over themselves and realize they are talented and it is not a field that is high paying (fair or not) and people may not respect you. But hey, you get to do what you love for a living and most people can't do that.

End of my rant. Hate crap like this book. Do something about it instead of pouting.</body>
