Hate to post this but the thread we were having the discussion in (http://emptees.com/posts/69801-fan-art-and-what-i-can-cant-delete) has been locked. I think there were some valid points in it and we should discuss this a bit more.

At any rate, I'm concerned about quality control as much as anyone else here, but I think the way to handle it is to have people be more involved. Comment on more tee designs. Voice your opinion! The designer will either step up their game or give up. This will spill over to other designers. They'll see that if you post crap you're going to catch some shit for it. When I first joined this site EVERYONE commented on tees being posted. You were forced to step it up or close up shop. I understand that there's way more tees being posted than there was 2 years ago. Still, we can all do a bit more commenting/critiquing. Just deleting their design does nothing for anyone.

I think EVERYONE (myself included) need to comment on more tees and get more involved in the community. Just starting threads and making posts isn't really being involved. We all need to start providing more critiques to artists. Otherwise this site will become like Deviantart. It'll be a ton of crap with a few gems here and there. The respected artists will probably move on due to the lack of talent and this site will be overrun by mediocre designs.

Again, deleting them isn't the answer. Educating the designer through constructive critiques is the way to go. If you guys and gals want a community then you have to make it happen yourselves. Bitching about it isn't going to change anything.

I'll step off my soapbox now.

I'm extremely against deleting a post because this is not an elite site and everyone has a right but I am too concerned about quality control. There should be a separation between actual tee posts you can purchase and ones for sale/others. I for one want to see shirts that I can actually purchase if I'm feeling it and it'll help filter the designs. There will still be a section for ones you are trying to sell and whatnot but it'll be in it's own category, I don't know.

i think the idea of an elite site motivates people to become better so that they can be part of the tees that are showcased. i know that even my works aren't great, and i won't have a totd for a very long time, if ever. but it doesn't motivate me to work any harder if shitty tees get the same response as good ones.

I wanted to post this in dobi's thread but it got closed, so I'll post it here:

I really appreciate dobi asking first. Asking for opinions on decisions regarding the forum/site is the sign of a good mod. If he hadn't of asked (Whether he had actually deleted the design or not), this conversation and these topics might not have come up.

And I totally agree with you Geoff. I've said it before - The only thing that will be the downfall of Emptees will be all of the regulars giving up on it. The threat to this site isn't the noobs with no respect or the trolls or the rippers. They have very little impact of this site. Emptees' fate is in the hands of all the great artists that are here and posting everyday. Participation is key. The more that all of us put into the site, the greater it will be.

For someone who is a student this site really helps, it points out specific things more than my art graphics teacher does, its incredible to think that there is a group of people who may be willing to give you the advice you need.

Yes Yes Yes. I think keeping comments constructive goes a long way. Certain people think that being brutally honest/telling the truth (their perception of the truth) is like their public service to this community. For me all it does is make me think they're tossers. Like I said in the other thread it's always from more established members too. All that does is set a bad example to others who think it's ok and justified to pick on the less experienced members of this community and so it goes on. Everyone has the right to their opinion, good or bad, it's just about how your convey that to that person that is the important part.

I do come on this site daily but weather i post an opinion or some art in the illustrations post i just seem to get ignored.

This year i hope to participate more with this community as i do find it inspirational and i can see why everyones panicking about how the site should develop.

justgeoff said: In art school we used to do a project and then present it to the class. It would be torn apart by people for 10-15 minutes. It sucked and was a huge blow to my ego but it definitely helped make me a better designer. Same thing applies here.

I went through the same thing also and it made me a much stronger artist. My teacher used to take on persona's as different customers and act them out during your pitch. It was great.

I'm at the point where I just don't care about the bad attitudes anymore. I'm gonna give my criticism and if they want to be little shitheads I will let them be run out of emptees on their own by their actions.

Talk about frustrating. Sometimes it's like talking to a wall.

i dont know dude, i've seen a lot of crap show up on here, most people forget that this is a place for designers to showcase their work, and EVERY PERSON has a well trained eye for quality. if the image sucks, if you live traced some photograph, and slapped on some crap text... good god someone get rid of it. there are too many good artists on here to be swamped down with utter crap.

i get the whole argument about free speech, and art being subjective, but theres a fine line to draw.

the shirt with teh rolling stones is a prime example. its not a good shirt. no one will buy it, no one bought it, its just a fantasy mockup?

its a waste of time and space when yours, or my artwork can be shown. i'd rather see some crappy monster drawn in MS PAINT before i'd want to see some stolen copywrighted image.

both should be shipped back to Deviant art where fan art is accepted, and get the hell out of Emptees.
