<body>I've been playin around with watercolors a little bit and wanted to post for critique. This is the second watercolor piece that I've done. Any pointers? One thing I would have done if I could do it over is put down a background wash. It seems to be missing that nice watercolor texture. Anyone else have watercolor pieces to post?

Agreed. A wash would have made this better, but whatcha gonna do. The only watercolours I have are stuff from school, never got into it, usually failed at whatever it was I was trying to achieve.</body>

<body>I love watercolor. These days I tend to use it more as BG and collage parts to digital pieces, but it's still my favorite medium. For first efforts these are good, in a year you'll probably be awesome dude. In terms of pointers here's a few things, forgive me if any of this is too obvious.

1. Work light to dark. If you don't plan out your highlights ahead of time you're fucked. Liquid mask is a great way to keep your highlights white too. Actually you probably don't want a true white on most pieces. Setting down a VERY light wash to be your lightest color can help all the colors look more harmonious when its done. The pure white can be jarring.

2. Paper is very important. Generally those cheap pads suck for finished pieces. They're good for sketches and practice but for a nice finished piece spring for some better paper. The type of paper you use is also going to give that texture you're looking for. Hot press is a smoother finish while cold press is rougher and the texture will show through the watercolor glazes more. Get yourself some 90 lb, 150 lb, and 300 lb cold/hot press to play around with and you'll see all the different effects that can be made. Good paper can be very expensive though.

3. Change your water constantly. Clean water means truer colors. Watercolors get muddied up easily.

4. Working "wet on wet"or "wet on dry" will affect the look greatly. If you want that dreamy, everything blends into itself you want to work "wet on wet". For great detail and to define edges you'll want to go "wet on dry"

5. Brown madder, Pthalo Blue, and Paynes grey. These are some of your most valuable weapons.

6. Experiment. You can make some really great effects with saran wrap, salt, a spray bottle.......pretty much anything that will manipulate water. An old toothbrush makes AWESOME splatter.

Here's some older watercolor work:
