when I say this kinda stuff though it doesn't come off very well...but then again people are usually listening more to how you say something than what you say, it's only natural...

there are so many shitty sign companies here in Missouri...it's pretty bad...no one gives two shits about quality, it's all about the benjamins...

capitalism could destroy art if there isn't some sort of grass-roots movement that actually makes an impact

I am also in STL... i Have joined an art group called ArtDimensions, if you have heard of it... they are pretty rad people, trying to really make the STL art scene pop.. though you are correct.. not a lot of opportunity at all.. I just hope ArtD and other artists can help STL grow..
I would like to help as much as I can until I make my way out ha.

Yeah it is.. I have been meeting a lot of awesome STL artists and been getting into a lot of live painting through them. Plus they are working on a really awesome gallery/venue/bar/artist studio space on Cherokee.. when it is all set to go, it should be an awesome spot to hang.

hmm this is the first time i heard of Art Outside.. but I most likely will check it out.. sounds like a good time..

You should hit up Taste Of St. Louis.. that should be a good event.. I am going to be doing Art Wars there.. it'll be a good time.. coming up in october.

And I completely agree. I looooooove old 50's and 60's motel signs. Absolutely classic American design. There's a lot of them in my town. I hope they continue to stick around.

There's so many people that churn out that kind of half-assed design crap. I personally can't believe people pay for that stuff.

The problem is ignorant business owners that dont do their homework or no what they want. They dont appreciate the creative industry at all, they just trust some old dude with a degree saying this will cost you so and so and this is how it should look.

I agree but how do we do that? Start a graphic design union dedicated to revamping american arts?

*Also the main problem is the corporate/professional type design, those are the people that dont get it. I think America is on point in a lot of other types of design such as fashion, music, traditional arts and so on.

the reason why this shit is happening is because design as a whole is looked down upon in this country, especially once you go off the coasts.

most people think its a hobby, not an actual respectable career. and as such, less and less qualified people are teaching future generations, especially at public schools and lower cost private schools. im starting to think that the only place you can be nearly guaranteed to get a high quality design education is at well known design schools that cost a lot.. which is depressing.

its amazing how many kids are already in their junior year of college (like myself..) who dont even know how to use photoshop/illustrator/indesign properly (unlike myself) and are studying to be a graphic designer!

i mean yes, those programs are merely tools, but thats like a painter graduating art school not knowing how to use a paintbrush! at least schools seem to be focusing on the foundations of graphic design, especially (to some extent..) the history behind it. but design theory and history can only go so far when you have no drawing skills, painting skills, sculptural skills, or computer skills. there needs to be a better balance - either schools churn out 'mac monkeys' or people who have a decent knowledge of design but no hand skills in producing original work.

ive lived here my whole life and come across a vintage sign maybe once or twice a year. unfortunately, mass chains of stores, hotels and restaurants have overtaken mom and pop shops that often had these quirky signs. the most depressing part of living in america (and perhaps other places.. dont know though) is the growing homogenization of our culture. i think the most scary part is our food. we have a ton of chains (applebees, fridays, ruby tuesdays, chilis, outback steakhouse, houlihans, chipotle grill, ect.) that pretty much serve almost the exact same food - like 85% of the menu is close to exact.

I see shit like that all the time.
The amount of bullshit design work done by little office shops are fucking outrageous.

I live in Canada and here we have Macs convenience stores (kinda like a less awesome 7 eleven, although we have seven elevens as well) and I approached one somewhere in Calgary and was greeted with this giant backlit sign advertising their slushies.

The add was a kid sipping a slushy, and in large uncreative unsplendor stood out the words "COLD SUCKS" in nothing other than Comic Sans font.
long explanation for something not that intense, but either way its everywhere. My dad tried to get some company to design him a sign, and it was 10x worse than that sunrise motel sign. He near damn paid 2000$ for that sign...i saved the day though...kinda.

As a graphic designer of signs etc, a lot of the problem is sign shops not employing designers and just getting anyone to do the designs up. Where I live our competitor undercuts our prices by huge amounts and supplies poor quality and poorly laid out designs for the most part. It falls apart and then they come to us, but that ugly sign or vehicle has been driving around town tainting the landscape.

Some clients don't understand/value the graphic designer - a lot do not factor in the time it takes to put it together and only care about the face value price of the actual physical sign.

As with any design field, often clients make 6 thousand revisions that end up butchering your initial layout (like the menu I did where they kept expecting me to find space for items everyone of the 6 revisions) or they just want something plain ugly. Like, you sit down and take a brief - and they want that orange sunset gradient, and it kills you having to design it, but it's what they want.

Then there are the wannabe designers who have Microsoft Project or a cracked copy of Illustrator (who never outline their fonts and make me want to cry). You can't refine their design, because that's their final artwork.

I personally think all towns should have some kind of set guidelines as to the signage that goes up, or something like that - because I see a lot of ugly crap and it is truly visual pollution.

Even if I hate the style of something I'm designing, I still try my hardest to at least make sure it's as good as it's possibly going to look because it's out there and people are going to be looking at it every day.

I dont consider myself a designer- I am no where near subtle enough to do design, i am a drawer- i draw stuff.

but when I did design in Uni my lecturer told us that a designers job was basically %50 tyring to convince the client that the designer is right.

Ameeee said: As a graphic designer of signs etc, a lot of the problem is sign shops not employing designers and just getting anyone to do the designs up.

Even if I hate the style of something I'm designing, I still try my hardest to at least make sure it's as good as it's possibly going to look because it's out there and people are going to be looking at it every day.

if you think signs are bad you should see the NYC subway ads... 90% are pure hideous shit. its awful. especially the ones on the trains themselves.
