what if I change to permalinks now? will that mean every link to my blog will suddenly be invalid?

This thread is relevant to my interests. Thinking about starting a blog in a few months.
Thanks Mr Kruse!

Im pretty sure it forwards the pages to the new ones, but your page rank will be lost since its a new url.
You can always change it back to normal.

the best thing you could do with wordpress would be to stop using it and start using expressionengine!

just look around
it does what pretty much no other CMS manages to do (from my experience) its hugely robust and powerful, but not overly complicated to learn. also, it lets you design your site with html/css and then add in the dynamic parts anywhere you need...so really you are implementing a cms throughout your design, whereas with things like drupal, joomla, and wordpress, you are wrapping a design around a cms.

Sounds cool. I didnt see anything amazing in their showcase but theres a lot more room for a designer. Just when I figured out wordpress to.
Do you have any websites using this? Ive heard you talk about web design before but Ive never seen any of your stuff.

Cool post, thanks Jon. I am new the the world of wp but these are helpful things to know as I develop my Ugmonk blog.

yeah, the showcase on the site isnt necessarily dazzling to the eye, but the emphasis is on the dynamic capabilities and the underlying technology and ease of use it provides.
how good the sites LOOK is totally up to the designer.
ive just always hated building client sites around joomla and wordpress. while you can customize and skin them, there are still so many limitations and forced systems that you cant avoid without a TON of trouble. WP isnt as bad..but joomla and drupal are evil.
the need for a super lightweight CMS actually drove us to write our own at work, called Thrive, so we implement that for client websites but for my freelance work, now I implement Expression Engine. The install is super simple...just create a database and run the EE installer on the domain and BAM! youre up and running, then drop in your xhtml/css into a new template and setup your dynamic areas and youre gold. makes it suuuuper easy for me to allow clients to update areas of dynamic text, news, blogs, calendars, etc. Its awesome and I cant talk it up enough!
Ive actually been working on my freelance portfolio all day long and should have it up within a day or two. Ill post the link in here and you can check out a ton of my stuff.

I just remembered how awesome the 'subscribe to comments' plugin is, it sends you an e-mail whenever someone else comments on the same blog post as you, I think every blog should have it.
