Driving Across the United States of America

posted 2 months ago by jaynajaynajayna

I’m making plans to do this with a couple of dude friends. 3 weeks, New York to LA. Though it’s tentative it’s probably gonna be something like New York, Buffalo, Cleveland, Chicago, (all places I got people to stay with) and then just kind of snake our way through the Midwest, Kansas, Colorado.. etc. camping and stealing corn from farms and grilling it, staying in cheap motels... drive further south and hang out in LA for a bit once we get there before starting all over again and driving back.

Anyone done this? Do you have any fabulous stories to share with me?? Advice? Horror stories?!

We will be bringin a video camera too, documentin shit.

Something I’ve always wanted to do, and I’m gonna do it god damnit!

Stop in Lawrence, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri. Awesome shops and even more awesome people. I wish I could remember the name of the coffee shop in lawrence that was awesome..

Edit: Aimee’s on Massachusetts Street (assuming they are still there). Tell them Justin sent you! Not really.. I’ve only ever been there once about 3 years ago and did not introduce myself.

Back story - 3 friends and I drove to Kansas (from eastern NJ) to see the Get Up Kids 10th anniversary show at the Granada in Lawrence. Took around 24 hours. Drove straight through, hung out in Lawrence for a few hours before the show. After the show we went and slept on the floor in some girls dorm. Woke up about 5 hours later and drove home to get to work haha. Wish it wasn’t so rushed, but it was so killer!

Oh and also check out the instrument store (if you’re into that kind of thing) - it’s also on Mass. St. And most importantly, have a blast and bring toilet paper JUST IN CASE haha.

that sounds badass, i’d love to do something like that. try and hit up yellowstone, hike the narrows in Zion, see the salt flats in Utah, hike half dome in Yosemite, go to Vegas, and come visit/wind down in Newport Beach!

Last year around May I drove from Illinois to southern California up to northern California, stayed for a day and then drove back from northern California through the northern part of the US.. Iowa, Nebraska, etc etc. by myself. I did all of this in 8 days.

It was exciting and somewhat scary at times (driving through the desert, no cell reception), shit looks exactly how you see it in the horror movies - small out of service gas stations, beat down trailers with 50 abandoned cars in the lawn.

But it sucked because I didn’t have time to stop and check things out. It was a straight drive. If I had had time to stop and check things out it probably would have been pretty cool. But I also was stuck in the car with a ferret and a frantically meowing cat which drove me nuts.

Moral of the story - if you’re going to do it, take your time and enjoy it. Don’t bring pets. And make sure you always fill up before you reach half a tank of gas.

i have done this. and it was life changing.

YOU WILL WANT TO STOP IN HOSTELS!!!!! super cheap, and usually dab smack in the middle of downtown major cities. AND you meet a ton of awesome young international travelers, most... horny. then when you want to get away camping is good, if you are into it.

i mainly visited most of the national parks i could. it was more a nature trip than was a visit cities.

    Colorado/Arizona/Utah was most beautiful.
    Next to Oregan/Washington coast.

i chronicled my 30 day solo roadtrip a little. pictures!

    starts here

oh hey... college sucks and is worthless. but finish anyways.

I did this for 5 years.

I also drove from San Francisco to Orlando non-stop (only for gas of course). It took 54 hrs. I thought I was going to lose my mind.

You’ll have a blast though. Be safe and watch out for holes in restrooms and lot lizards!

No mate, if you’d have stopped, youd have been raped and chainsawed up and youd be an ornament on some dudes bedside table right now. lol. That sounds really scary. I wanna go to america and if I only do one thing, its gonna be drive across it with some friends. We should so a UK emptee’ers tour of america some time...

Probably more like $1750-$2500 depending on where they go.

My whole trip was 11,000+ miles.
    30 days.
    Food,gas,lodging,souvenirs cost about $5000.

if you feel like driving from LA to TN... I have a bed for you to stay in. we have a shower too.. i just scrubbed it in the last week although the curtain still has some mildew growth.

once... at 1 am... when there was a forest fire in Montana, i was on the interstate, and it was so smokey it was hard to see...

AND THE FUCKING MOUNTAINS WERE BURNING...

and many hours later, i reach the Tetons at sunrise, it was most beautiful.

I Highly Recommend a TomTom or Equivalent. Also pick up a hostel listing pamphlet at the first one you hit. Flagstaff hostel was rad.

I have seen the movie National Lampoon’s Vacation, so I know that this is going to be awesome. I might put on a blonde wig and seductively pass you in a red sports car occasionally to the sound of 'Holiday Road' or 'I’m so excited'..

I want to do this! This would be so EPIC:

Where I live in maryland is this sign:

It is the beginning of Route 50 in Ocean City, MD.

Then drive across the United States to end up at this sign in Sacramento, CA, the end of Route 50:

I have seen both signs, but a plane got me to the Sacramento one. I want to drive it, and catch all the cool things in between!
