sadly enough, this is what it resorts to. $500 shouldn't even be the bottom of the barrel.

Well I'll personally price out logos based on how big the business is, and how much I would have to put into it.

A lot of agencies are slashing prices to the tune of 65% off because of spec work killing the industry.

Not a newb question. They're similar, but not. Branding encompasses a lot of research and concepting. Not to mention you have to have a ton of forethought, since you need to make it versatile for uses that might arise in the future. Also, with branding, you're designing all the collaterals (business cards, letterhead, postcards, etc...) that go along with the project. A type treatment is just that, a type treatment.

Also, sometimes with branding you have to make different versions of the logo, like one for dark backgrounds and one for lighter backgrounds. I used to work for Xerox as a designer and we did a ton of work for Owens Corning. Their logo usage manual was about 100 pages (another thing that you usually create with branding). So it was more than the simple Owens Corning logo and the Pink Panther.

Horst does tremendous work for metal band logos (even though he's entirely too cheap), but I don't think that was really where this thread was going...more for a company identity design.

If you want a cheap one check out a guy called <a href="http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=173937740">HORST</a>.

He is less than £50, and is very good.</blockquote>

Horst does tremendous work for metal band logos (even though he's entirely too cheap), but I don't think that was really where this thread was going...more for a company identity design.</blockquote>

Yeah I agree, but he has a lot of styles and I was just getting him out there for any other people reading that were on a tight budget.

Sorry ;D

That said I would encourage any company owner to do their own research and decide for themselves what the logo should be and have an idea of what it should look like.
I agree with justgeoff.

My 9-5 job is as a Creative Director at a London Design Agency who specialize in branding – and in my opinion (and it's only my opinion) if you get a logo for less the $500 you are very lucky. Or you have been robbed!

In not just about slapping the first thing down on paper, and decent designer will do his or her research into your competitors, will think about how your identity will need to be applied, will consider how the identity could evolve as your business grows and should look at various design options etc. It really can be a quite an indepth, lengthy process - for example we recently completed a branding project for an International electronics company and I think the final bill was $50,000+.

That said I appreciate that as a small clothing company you will not have the budget of a large blue chip company – and if was undertaking the project on a freelance basis I would consider this when quoting – So if somebody is offering to design an identity for peanuts, yeah it might be a good deal . But it might also mean you end up with an identity that does not work as well as it could do and could ultimately damage your brand.

So my advice is ask the right questions, see if you can get examples of previous, similar work, and if you are happy with the answers and it's only $500 bite his hand off quick!

Cheers Trix

It really depends on how the Logo will be used and you should take in all key factors of what type of company they are along with they're overall mission. The dude who did the nike logo always comes up. So think about that... The guy who redid the pepsi logo got amazing money for that I'm sure but I'm sure it wasn't just some 5 hour job, I'm sure they went through tons of concepts and had a ton of designers and marketing geniuses develop a display & proposal for years down the road how the logo change would effect it's already effective brand wisely.

I have worked on a logo for 3 months straight with a Marketing Consultant and in the end it came out to be awesome. I was getting paid 1,000 a week salary to work on it along with other projects. But if I were to divide up the time the logo was probably around $6000...

$500 - $1,000 is what I would charge a local restaurant or shop. The least being if they only have one location or if they had multiple it would be more.

Corporate Identity depending on it's size, revenue and overall mission I would say between
$2,000 & $6,000 but I would also provide an identity package. With logos in all shapes, sizes, formats, b&w, vector, fax sheets, letter head, envelope, etc...

Also, one more fun fact.. When I was a video game tester @ Activision. This designer would get commissioned for $35,000 a game to do a game logo for new games at Activision.. It would take him about 3 months and he would play the game for inspiration... Ridiculous!

this thread's a pretty good read. I don't have much to add other than to agree with a good amount of the posts before mine and to add that, as a freelancer having clientele rooted primarily in independent music or local small businesses, I generally end up charging between $350.00 - $600.00 for this type of work.

I've worked for a design firm doing work for clients such as FORD models, Sports Illustrated, Sotheby's, Conde Nast, Men's Health, etc. and rates for those types of clients are considerably higher.

It's very dependent on the scope of the project, really.

But thats for your run of the mill client that wants to put a hedgehog on a tractor and have it say something like "look whose mowing grass!"... but if you do something for a university, your looking more in the ball park of $5k and up... way up. The market is in a very sad state right now.</blockquote>

It'll remain that way until designers take some pride in their profession and stop lowballing.</blockquote>

100% agreed and that's why i love freelancing. I have worked for agencies/studios that asked $150 for a logo. I felt like a cheap whore. As long as i got my paycheck i was happy but it's the thought that counts.
I must say though, that these agencies were only the little fish in the pond and the clients were mostly the ones with the tight budgets and always trying to bargain as if they were on a fleemarket. It were the types of client who would have made their own logo in MS Word if they had the time but still willing to let a pro do it for them, ofcourse for a nice little price... We just didn't have any multinationals with a 5k marketing budget so these agencies adapted their rates to these types of clients. Sad but true.

Glad i'm (almost) a fulltime freelancer nowadays.
