These are photos of albatross chicks that are fed human waste from an ocean swimming with our detritus. Fed to them by their mothers as they search for food. They die from starvation, choking or poisoning. Makes you proud to be human doesn't it.

think of this next time you buy frivolous shit.

see all the sobering pictures here: &lt;a href="http://www.chrisjordan.com/current_set2.php?id=11"&gt;chris jordan&lt;/a&gt;. Amazing how pictures so simple can make such an impact- for me anyway- I know some of you enjoy hurting defenseless creatures directly or indirectly.

<body>the global warming argument makes me laugh- that there is even an argument. They say 'there's no proof', ok then, lets accept that there is no proof, lets take that- but then can you still look at mass industry and mass waste and think that its all gonna be ok? should we really just carry on, or would it be prudent to maybe take some action regardless. Surely then prevention is better than cure. Only absolute morons would say that we should do nothing.

same with health care- maybe you dont like the direction the debate is heading, but again, surely you cant deny that free health care, the saving of lives regardless of money is a good idea? So then should we at least move forward towards it in some way?

these comments here are not strictly about global warming or health care, but rather about the inability for some people to see beyond their own emotional knee jerk reactions and think clearly on a subject/debate/argument. </body>

and btw, socialists don't take your business...communists do...for some reason the line between communism (or what we call communism) and socialism has been lost thanks to the Limbaughs and Faux Newses of the world...

no one who went to a public school is allowed to complain about socialism, btw, it's a rule I just made up...

nothing is going to change until our culture shifts a bit (and culture changes so fast that it won't be long, one way or another)...our self worth in this country is directed related to our amount of consumption...and that's pretty much it...
it's pretty sad...

<body>Well I just spent a week in a small village in Bulgaria, and boy I tell you I got a huge heaping helping of humble pie. The importance of a loaf of bread for your stomach or a warm room to sleep in is vastly overlooked. Now I feel like a big fat american asshole with my huge house, nice car, electronics, etc.

All plastics must be earth tone by LAW!!!! Imagine if every plastic produced in the world had to be an earth tone. Every bottle of detergent, your printer, your television, the pepsi logo, the plastisol ink we use on tee shirts, your camera, car parts, shoes, hats, baby strollers, linoleum floors....etc...etc its all disposable.

thats is so idealistic its completely unrealistic, and you propose to FORCE people to do it because of birds. </body>

lol...I know its just an idea in a thread, but we do have to think broader than that.

Those pictures really sadden me and I feel horrible about those birds and the ocean and all the pollution. I know we can do something about it too.

As far as birds swallowing tv sets, no BUT all the things I listed get thrown away at some point and the plastic never goes away it just breaks into smaller pieces, some of those end up in the oceans.

Having an orange bottle top isn't that important but I wouldn't want to force the bottler to make it brown either. We have to have better ways to deal with the problems then automatically calling ourselves gluttonous assholes.

I really believe that humanity is a disease infecting this planet ( see The Matrix )We need to accept that, and start coming up with better more realistic ways we can save the planet so that we can suck the life out of her! </body>

There are few other birds that travel as far out to sea. I think that's the point though, their nesting grounds and feeding grounds in the sea are so remote and yet our trash is making it into their guts. </body>

This isn't just happening to the albatross, this is happening to countless species throughout the world. Marine life in particular are greatly effected by not just pollution but all waste in general. I'm sure many of you have heard of the giant trash island(s) floating in the ocean, the most famous one being twice the size of texas.

As for some people saying that the albatross is just stupid or it should have known better, this is nonsense, what is it you're saying exactly? It's the bird's fault? That animals should just know better? Dinosaurs did in fact evolve from earlier smaller reptiles, but this process took tens of millions of years, plastic waste and other harmful pollution have been around, what, at most a hundred years? Animals like the albatross have evolved over millions of years to not pass up opportunities to eat interesting looking objects in their environment, it's what's made them successful, and now they're supposed to override hardwired instincts because what, we're too lazy and ignorant to think of better ways to deal with out waste?

I'm sure that sounded like an angry rant, but it wasn't, I just think people should now more about these types of things and I'm glad GM posted it.</body>

<body>There really isn't time to move on to a new planet, we're racing towards a wall, and the only thing that will make a difference is deciding to change the way we live. The problem with ideas like "we assimilate natural materials and move on" is that it's a relatively new concept, but one we've lead ourselves into believing is true and unavoidable. We weren't always like this. Our culture is something we constructed and, if we really wanted to, we could make a new one. We just always take sooo long to stop being narrow minded, and this time around we're facing extinction. </body>

<body>Haha, death worth secrets.. must be nice.

It's true there are a lot of new and exciting things happening by people who do give a shit, it just takes so much work to get governments and "average joe" on board.

And I am sorry that ostrich ate your hat. If it's any consolation he probably ended up an ostrich burger.</body>

<body>Kind of along the same lines (one causes the other imo) from the same photographer: http://www.chrisjordan.com/current_set.php?arch_id=1

The design of items (especially of mass consumption) really is stupid at times. One of the obvious ones is the plastic hoops that hold cans, usually alcohol.

Maybe more sympathetic design could be the way to go, and possibly in tandem with recycling as much as possible. Non-reusable products, and especially packaging could have different rules on what they're made of or how they must be disposed of.

I dunno, it would be a start.</body>
