This is a very simple trick in Illustrator using the blend tool. You basically just blend 2 distinct shapes that have an outline. The outlines should have different colors so they blend like a gradient as well as create weird shapes. Try it it's pretty simple!

It definitely can. The design is big enough to have some art on the back.
