Shirt design for a clothing company called Coastal Concepts. This was accepted and will be printed. Not sure when it will be available, I’m thinking Spring.

Sure I’ll agree that it looks a bit like Horsebites, he’s a big inspiration and I like the way he draws/colors. Although I kept thinking in my head the whole time "do not make this look like horsebites" but sure enough my hands couldn’t stop drawing and I couldn’t help it. We have similiar styles - which explains why we’re doing a collaborative shirt.

I originally sketched a very rough idea on paper first which I then scanned and put into Photoshop. I made my document huge like 25" x 30" or something. And then started drawing on top with my Wacom tablet. Then I got crazy with the details which were obviously not in the sketch.

I figured this was done with a wacom in Illustrator! I wish my brushes weren’t so messed up and shaky in Photoshop, otherwise I’d trace my sketches in it. You could do this with pressure sensitivity and calligraphy brushes in Illustrator?

Drew, yeah you could do it in Illustrator too. But I have gotten used to the PS handles the pressure sensitivity. I just use a round hard brush, so it’s nothing complicated.

Yes! I can’t use Illustrator because I can’t get it to vary my line width the way I want it to. Also, turning the pen over and using the eraser is the greatest.

I just zoom in to combat the shakyness, and to an extent I like for the lines to waver some in most cases.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I like the shape of the brushes with pressure sensitivity in Photoshop, but I have a Cintiq, and it has issues with the line quality in Photoshop. I have no idea why, and Wacom couldn’t figure it out when I contacted them. I just stick to Illustrator...so I was wondering if you could replicate this in Illustrator. Thanks Jeff!

Yeah, it’s really extreme. I know what you mean though. Plus, I have issues figuring out the pressure sensitivity in Photoshop. I want a quick tutorial on the best brush settings/pressure sensitivity for Illustrator and Photoshop.

I turn the fidelty and smoothing of the brush all the way down so it pretty much draws the line as I do.

I ask Jeff because he’s the master, and his lines are really sketched looking and it keeps that handrawn look. I know he uses both photoshop and illustrator with the wacom, so I just want to know what brushes/pressure sensitivity settings to use in both ahah.

In PS it’s just a hard round brush with pressure on. I don’t really mess with the settings. And I don’t know my illustrator settings, I change them often to see what works best.

I just create my own new calligraphy brush with pressure on for the size. I just use different sizes depending. Then I adjust the brush settings to fidelity 4 and the smoothness at -0. That works best for me. The lines are smooth but you can make them rough enough to keep a sketched look. I guess you just stick with what works best.
