haha my graphic arts teacher told us that 'k' stood for black, and that they didnt use 'b' because people might think it stood for blue.

i could be wrong but i think it suppose to be CMY. in theory CMY should act like the opposite of RBG where R=0, B=0, G=0 will create black and R=255, B=255, G=255 will create white. so again in theory C=100, M=100, and Y=100 should make black, but for some reason it makes a muddy brown, so someone made K for Key(black).
