I think this subject is a huge issue in the design community, and it may come down to what a design is. Is a design an original photo/drawing? Or is design the art of composition and arrangement? Ethically, we can also agree that a shirt that utilizes famous imagery will be more appealing instantly to a wider audience of people, and original art takes longer to cultivate a strong following and audience.
