Atop the slopes of Crystal Peak
And near the wooded ring,
They say there dwells a matted beast
An awful, horrid thing.

It sails atop a blood-red blade
That slices as it goes
They say it's looking for its prey
(Some say for its foes)

Some have said that it's a monster
Born of different beasts
One that flew and one that sauntered
Both which liked to feast

Some say once it was a man
Who gradually was changed
(Lurking snowpeaks without a plan
Made him go deranged)

But I'm the only one that knows
The truth about the beast:
He's just looking for powdery snow
And it's there on Crystal Peak.

一心一意 / 衣新衣异

This past weekend a Chinese friend helped me come up with a cool homonym that I plan on using on a shirt one day. When spoken (yi xin yi yi), it sounds like a phrase that means "intent, dedicated, focused, wholehearted", but when read, it means "new and unique clothes".

Anyways, that's where the name of this shirt comes from. The actual design is for Woot. They didn't like the F-16-munching Cyclone...

But yeah, this one was a fun little experiment in halftones. Probably went overboard with it (I usually don't use them at all) Still, it's only 4 colors, so totally within their printing abilities.

A quick glance at the midday sky told the pilots everything they'd hoped; the breeze was gentle and the air clear. Had it not been for their roaring turbines charging for flight, they'd have even heard the song of a local flock of birds roosting in a tree just beyond the airstrip.

It was, according to all available indicators, a perfect day for flying.

Unfortunately, these indicators were not set to monitor the strange weather patterns brewing in Leesville, South Carolina, an hour west of the pilots' pleasant training spot. These anomalous conditions would eventually spawn a monstrous and deadly cyclone, which one local corn farmer would describe as doing more damage than "th' time ol' Manny McCann fell asleep on th'combine".

And actually, the corn farmers had it easy; only the tip of the devilish cyclone's tail ever touched ground, and sparingly at that.

The real damage was done thousands of feet into the sky, where the chaotic helix of writhing air devoured the crew of pilots, thrashing them in their cockpits before they could eject to safety.

And as the last pilot, Chuck Spear, felt the air ripped from his lungs and watched his plane, Enora Ivy, peeled away like a banana skin, he thought to himself, "Well Ah'll be, blue skies don't mean nothin' no more..."

Keith was always quiet
Lurking about his home
There was little else he'd ever do
But lap his ice cream cone

Some folks thought he couldn't speak,
Some folks jeered and teased,
But Keith only needed one short phrase:
"I want more ice cream, please"

Friends would ring the doorbell,
"Keith, come out to play!"
But through a screen Keith stared at them
And lapped his cone away

Eventually the friends gave up
On strange Keith and his cone
Eventually they found other games
Keith was, at last, alone

But one day in hot July
Visitors arrived
An alien race from another world
called Elron Exus Prime

They zapped the small town where Keith lived,
His school and all his friends
And when he was given the chance to live
He just shrugged, "Depends."

"Depends on what?!" the creatures asked
Their black eyes gleaming wide
"Tell me a bit about your spaceship,
the things you have inside"

And so the aliens listed things
They'd captured from the earth
From bugs and worms to cows and trains,
Stacks of volume's worth

But little Keith kept quiet,
Nodding as they talked
Waiting for a single item
To decide to stay or walk

And when they finally mentioned it,
He cheered and bounced and ran
For he could be happy anywhere
With an ice cream cone in hand

This started last night just moving around this giant "f", slicing it and making faces out of the shapes.

Initially I made it a goal to keep it to a single color (the grey), but at the last minute I made some changes so that the white could get incorporated as well. I also tried experimenting with simplifying the lines and shapes as much as possible. I still think it's a little more complex than it needs to be, but I'm hesitant to take it any farther. Maybe with the next piece.

This is in line for a June release so check the shop then.

I've never had a child, but I kind of picture it as being as magical as when I opened the box that contained my first batch of tees. If memory serves me right, the first thing I did was scream like a schoolgirl and prance giddily around my living room. I next laid them all out on the carpet in my room and rolled around on them. The climax of my hysteria was throwing them at the ceiling fan.

For the longest time I've kept this graveyard file where I lay unused vectors to rest once a design is completed and they haven't made the cut. Every once in awhile I open it up and sort through the pieces looking for something of use. Most times I end up just creating something new because the pieces are so random and awkward they don't get along with the other elements properly.

Meanwhile, I've been checking out all these cool street artists on Flickr with their custom stickers and wishing I had the means to make my own [high quality] stickers.

Anyway, you get where this is going: I finally dug out the idle graphics and made them into fake stickers on a tee... With a fake pair of scissors on the back...

EDITED for color addition...

This was just one of those straight-outta-the-head designs. One morning there I was, brushing my teeth and blinking a stubbon contact into submission when suddenly WHAMMO: Zebra. Barcode. Bamboo. Do zebras even cohabitate with bamboo? Doubt it. Do the markings of a zebra, in turn, possess any relation to the stripes on a barcode? Visually, well sure, but functionally? Well, maybe, but that’s only according to some hippologists who beleive that zebras use these markings to recognize one another. (Much as a scanner uses barcodes to differentiate between products) Another theory is that the stripes serve as camoflauge, protecting against predators such as lions who are colorblind and unable to distinguish between a zebra’s black and white markings and tall blades of grass.

But! This design does make up for its lack of depth with its cryptological message, burried deep in the soil beneath a rich fauna of numeric symbols. Mm! Fauna. No, but seriously, those numbers do actually have some significance, and it isn’t that hard to figure out. I mean, you shouldn’t have to like hijack a U-boat or anything. (A cellphone helps)

This is one of those designs that has evolved a lot conceptually from the intial stages. In all honesty, I started this just because I wanted to make a design with some dead trees. I thought they looked pretty. But as I worked on it a story began to turn in my head. Suddenly there were sand dunes and clouds and stars. As it stands, I suppose this is now a statement about the fingerprint that we’ve left on the planet. It’s like one of those photographs of a peruvian with a llama and an mp3 player, or a sparsely-clad amazonian tying his sneakers. So here’s the latest of old meets new: a camel shepherd dealing with a sky stained by pollutants from a distant factory.

But mostly it’s about the pretty dead trees.

There was nothing Mack Farelli despised quite so much as a Monday. He reserved a special loathing for that 24 hour period between his weekend and his Tuesday. This time, for him, was positively abysmal.

The Monday that fell on the 3rd of January, 1955, wasn't particularly dissimilar to the ones that preceded it. Naturally, he'd stumbled over Rupert his bloodhound on his way out of bed, causing him to fill the air with profanity as his frantic landing foot careened into the nightstand. The toenail, notably, was nowhere to be found. And so, while clutching his mangled appendage and hopping in the shower, Mack contemplated extending his weekend in an effort to dodge this day; but a single, innocent bar of soap would spare him this decision, for this small, waxy sliver of deceit had craftily positioned itself out of his vision, directly behind him.

At 7:35 Mack's neighbors heard a crash they would blame on another of his typical tantrums at the start of each week. It was, of course, no tantrum, but him thudding onto the shower floor to the introduction of the mischievous soap. He was thus whisked away to a realm of unconsciousness that would spare him the throbbing pain of a head wound that would eventually require 7 stitches. Ostensibly, this alternate reality would serve as a haven from the increasing unpleasantness of things, but sadly even his subconscious had no defense for those ruinous Mondays.

Still, the dream began innocently enough, with Mack enjoying the simple serenity of his favorite diner with his strawberry pop and turkey sandwhich. And then the windows exploded.

Yet another "coming soon" from Linty Fresh.

This one's for the contest thingy (mentioned here)

Not a whole lot to say about it, except that I think this is the first time I've tried blending these two styles (the streetsy cartoon feel + swirly vector stuff), so that was fun.

I hope this contest is still on...

From Linty Fresh...

This shirt tells the tale of Niloofar, the son of a blacksmith in a the small village of Freshington, which lay to the East of Lintidor Woods. Ever eager to see his son continue his legacy of metalworking, Niloofar’s father had secretly crafted a sword for his boy. But Niloofar despised his father’s trade and angrily stormed away upon receiving the sword. Brooding atop a hill overlooking their small village, Niloofar soon fell into a deep sleep. The next morning he awoke to the footsteps of the Knights of Freshington, the town heroes. They dolefully explained that during the night the Dreaded Shadowslug had emerged ferociously from its home deep in the woods and had devastated their peaceful town. With this news Niloofar ran frantically home only to cofrim his worst fears – his family had been among those devoured by the monster.

And so, with a vengeance burning red like the coals of his late father’s hearth, Niloofar slashed and charged fearlessly through Lintydor Woods. And the Great Shadowslug, with a belly still plump from its midnight feast, lay vulnerable to the young boy’s blade. As Niloofar erupted from the thicket, the monster squirmed like a massive yet feeble maggot lolling in the leaves, but to no avail. The beast had finally met its match…
